This quirky little café may seem a little haphazard - and it can be at times - but its charm has won us over this month. Let’s start with the name - adorable, right? Since we discovered this spot, we’ve found it hard not to smile thinking about having a good time at Have a Good Time. You might even say we had a good time doing it.
The brand is Japanese and along with a café in Tokyo they offer a range of clothing including some cool sweatshirts and hoodies emblazoned with the ‘Have a Good Time’ logo. Apparently the Julu Lu addition is a pop up, although the owner says he’ll be around for six months to a year. In Shanghai, a lot of new openings are lucky to last that long anyway.

The menu here is short and slightly chaotic, but again, this adds to the appeal. There are sandwiches, including the likes of a fresh and tasty avocado, mayonnaise and soft boiled egg open sandwich with whole-grain mustard (50RMB), and rice dishes including beef curry (60RMB) and omelette (from 50RMB) offerings.
From the à la carte options, the fresh and healthy carrot, walnut and rosemary salad (30RMB) is worth sampling, although on one visit is hand cut to order and arrives painstakingly slowly. Quicker to hit the table is a huge bowl of corn cream soup (25RMB), which tastes like it came from a Campbell’s can, but is nonetheless soothing.

The coffee beans are sourced from Shanghai-based roasters Rumors, and make a damn fine (although again, slow to arrive) hand drip cup (40RMB) and a rich and silky cappuccino (40RMB). Elsewhere on the drinks list is an overly milky, scalding-hot chai (40RMB). Don’t expect the world from this little newcomer, but enjoy its relaxed service, cool tunes, hodgepodge menu and tasty coffee. And maybe even buy a hoodie. And, of course, have a good time.
Have a Good Time is at 318 Julu Lu, near Maoming Lu.
