The full line-up for 2016's Shanghai Strawberry Festival has been revealed, and it's... a bit underwhelming. We already knew that British dance legends The Prodigy were set to headline - a good booking, even if the electronic slant is a little odd given organisers Modern Sky's plans to hold a dedicated electronic music festival two weeks after Strawberry - but turns out they're far and away the biggest name on the bill.
Joining them as headliners on the former Expo site for the May holiday will be fellow UK electronic acts Disclosure and (the already announced) Modestep. It's not quite the same as last year's mix of Dinosaur Jr, Carly-Rae Jepsen, Tricky and The Hives, but London-raised, big in the States duo Disclosure ought to draw a crowd.
Chinese Strawberry regulars such as punk-turned-dance-pop outfit New Pants (who just put out a new album), reggae rockers Long Shen Dao and old-school rock act Second Hand Rose will be joining, along with Beijing's Queen Sea Big Shark, just two weeks after the band play an album release show at MAO Livehouse.
66-year-old pop composer Ara Kimbo heads up the Taiwanese contingent for the festival, with Sissey Chou (the self-styled 'Jim Morrison of Taiwan' - no, really) and pop-rockers Matzka featuring as well. And there's a strong presence for Korean acts with Apollo 18, Exid and Hyukoh all appearing high up on the bill.
Excellent Lanzhou folk-rock act Low Wormwood will be making an appearance, and the festival will feature one of the first live outings for Anti-Dogs, the post-rock band formed in the wake of the demise of Shanghai stalwarts Top Floor Circus. Other Shanghai artists set to feature include Plastic Chocolate, Mamahuhu, Runaway Snail and DJs Conrank, Ben Huang and Cavia.
