Music platform Boiler Room is to debut in China this April, with shows scheduled for Shanghai and Beijing.
Boiler Room is a 'community of underground music fans', with the project best known for its live series, where world-renowned DJs, producers and musicians put together an mix in front of a live audience; the session is then recorded and available to watch on their website.
The first China Boiler Room session will be in Beijing on April 30, followed by a Shanghai show on May 1. It's a partnership with Beijing-based dART – a creative collective who put on parties 'celebrating art, innovation and technology' – and local media and tech behemoth Le TV.
Like all Boiler Room events, these shows will be invite-only and held at a private location, but the videos will be live-streamed. The China shows will be available to watch on Le TV (accessible without a VPN) as well as the Boiler Room site.
The line-up will be a mix of international and Chinese artists, according to organisers. When founded in 2010, Boiler Room was for DJ sets, but recently the platform has started to feature live music. Organisers are keeping details on the DL for now, but don't be surprised if the Shanghai session is a mix of both DJ sets and live shows.
Juliana Huxtable – the US poet, model, artist and DJ who's playing The Shelter next Friday (March 18) – played a Boiler Room session in New York last month. Some other notable musicians to record Boiler Room sessions are Gilles Peterson, Mark Ronson, LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy and Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke. For some of the best sets of last year, check out the Boiler Room's 2015 retrospective.
