The people behind Jingan club URVC are opening a new space this weekend, inside the Fuxing SOHO shopping mall complex above Xintiandi metro station.
Last weekend saw the final few parties take place at URVC as we know it, with the space now set to be converted into a live music bar with an emphasis on jazz performances. Clubbing-wise, the owners will now focus on the new venture at Fuxing SOHO, entitled Reel to Reel.
Reel to Reel (the name is a nod to their cassette tape decor theme) has two main rooms - the 'Hip Room' and the 'Groove Room' - while there is also a small outdoor area ('Space') and another 'hidden' open air space dubbed 'the Water Room'. The separate rooms are set to have their own unique atmospheres, with different music policies in each.
Aiming to give 'more DJs platforms to express their views on the art of DJing', in the words of co-founder Dave K, Reel to Reel is taking 'Berlin Berghain Techno, London Fabric Dubstep and Barcelona City Hall Deep House' as inspiration for their mission to turn Shanghai into 'a sleepless city'.
The opening salvo in this war on slumber will be on Friday night when Berlin-based DJ Hugo Capablanca will take over the Groove Room together with Shanghai DJ stalwart Andrew Bull and Mr Hell, while Luce and friends (RMZ and Lacy) from the SHFT crew will be doing the honours in the Groove Room along with Reel to Reel resident Marley Wong. Dave K will be among those playing the Water Room, with Deep 19 heading up the bill for Space.
