Southern Barbarian Ten Year Anniversary
Monday 1-Friday 5 August
The spate of recent restaurant and bar closures around town indicates just how hard it is to make a successful fist of it in Shanghai's F&B scene, so when an eatery is marking a ten year anniversary, it's something to shout about - particularly when that eatery is one of the best Yunnan restaurants in town. The decor may be looking a little shabby in places, but Southern Barbarian still serves some top-notch Yunnan food and this week they're offering 30 percent off all of their dishes, half-price Yunnanese mushrooms, plus buy-one-get-one-free on a range of beers.

Mr Gay China Grand Final
Friday 5 August, ICON, 60RMB (40RMB presale)
This week sees the Grand Final of the country's very first Mr Gay China competition. Not just a competition to show off the participant's physique, they will also showcase their talents and try to win the judges (including celebrity judge Mass Luciano, who was Mr Gay Hong Kong 2015) and the crowd over with their personality and intellect. The winner of Mr Gay China 2016 will go on to represent China to compete in the Mr Gay World Organization 2017.

Octopuss + Xie Tan Xiao
Wednesday 3 August, Yuyintang, 150RMB
The poster for this show bills Octopuss as playing 'Italian muzak', but their sound aims more for Electric Ladyland than elevator music. The gig is something of a double header, with renowned Chinese rocker Xie Tian Xiao also on the bill - making for a rare opportunity to see him in such an intimate venue. In short, it's one well worth getting out on a Wednesday for.
