D'n'b with Dom

Dom & Roland

Friday 15, 10pm, The Shelter, 60RMB

Sweatshop bring this drum’n’bass figurehead to China for the first time. Dom & Roland has been at the forefront of d'n'b for over 20 years, and as one of the pioneers of the 'tech-step' genre, he is well known for his cinematic otherworldly soundscapes. Dom will be joined by the Sweatshop collective including a special appearance by Daniel Power from the UK by the way of Shenzhen. It'll be a big night.

2

A beatmaker battle

Damacha vs Downstate

Friday 15, 10pm, DADA, Free

Downstate is (allegedly) threatening to leave town soon, so this might be the last chance to catch the whiz kid play his uniquely crafted beats in Shanghai. Add Damacha to the mix, and you've got two of the best music producers in town.

3

A MISA send off

2016 MISA Closing Concert: Long Yu and the SSO

Friday 15, 7.30pm, Shanghai SSO Hall, 100-300RMB

This year’s Music in the Summer Air ends with Long Yu leading the SSO in a China-themed programme, featuring works by Zou Ye. Also, Turkish pianist Fazil Say plays his own piano concerto entitled China Impressions.

4

A festival of speed

GoStar Music Festival

Saturday 16-Sunday 17, Shanghai International Circuit, 400-680RMB

US rapper Tyga (Saturday) headlines this electronic music and cars festival in Anting with Korean hip hop group Epik High (Sunday) and Mr Trouble also on a bill that's fleshed out with locally-based DJs such as Cavia and Mau Mau. Organisers are promising Virtual Reality elements and - more interestingly - some MMA bouts on the side. They also say there'll be car boot sales, food trucks and a load of races and super car parades out on the track during the day.

One for the fans

An Afternoon with Mr Yang

Sunday 17, midday, The Market, Free

Organised by Kick the Gong Around and hosted at The Market, An Afternoon with Mr. Yang is a fundraiser event to keep his craft - adorning traditional Chinese fans with calligraphy - alive. Your favourite food and beverage places from around town will be providing the nosh for the event, with a part of the proceeds going to Mr. Yang. Besides an illustration of his craft from the master himself, there will be other performances lined up - Jazz, Taichi, traditional fan dancing and more.

6

Serious strumming

2016 IFSGF

Sunday 17, 8pm, Qianshuiwan, 400RMB

Kotaro Oshio, Andy McKee (pictured) and Vitaly Makukin headline the International Finger Style Guitar Festival 2016 in Shanghai. Expect lots of intricate string plucking and strumming.
