

Shanghai Biennale 2016

This week sees the exciting arrival of the 11th Shanghai Biennale, with the works of a whopping 92 participating artists and artist groups from 40 countries worldwide occupying the atmospheric Power Station of Art. Alongside the main exhibition, other highlights of the Biennale include the project 51 Personae, a community-based project that aims to present the perspectives of ordinary people from every corner of the city. Elsewhere this week, works from the legendary artist Alex Katz go on display on Monday 7, just around the corner from the West Bund Art and Design Fair taking place from Wednesday 9-Sunday 13. There's also ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair opening on Thursday 10.

Electric Zoo: Countdown Shanghai
Saturday 12, Expo Garden Park, 399RMB (presale)
The giant New York-born Electric Zoo Festival, which this year hosted Tiesto, Hardwell, The Chainsmokers and Porter Robinson amongst others, comes to Shanghai with their debut China festival. Swedish DJ Dada Life tops the bill, alongside Sander Van Doorn, Hucci, Mako, Oshi, Codeko, Cavia and Fader One.
Elsewhere, French dub group Dub Invaders (formerly known as High Tone Soundsystem) are at The Shelter on Friday, and Saturday sees the special Gqom Oh! Showcase feat. Nan Kole & DJ Lag at the underground club.

Shen Wei Dance Arts: Map and Near the Terrace
Monday 7-Tuesday 8, Shanghai Grand Theatre, 80-880RMB
China produces some of the world’s best dancers, but internationally acclaimed choreographers are harder to find. Then there’s Shen Wei, the choreographer, director and artist who helped orchestrate 16,000 dancers during the 2008 Beijing Olympic opening ceremony, and whose decade-old Shen Wei Dance Arts company never fails to impress. This week, the company brings Map and Near the Terrace to Shanghai.

Daimon Bistro
Michelin-starred chef Alvin Leung's new Bund-side casual eatery and cocktail bar opened just a couple of weeks ago, and if you haven't checked it out yet there's no better time. The bistro is inspired by Kowloon Walled City, and boasts a deliciously inventive dim sum like pineapple bun stuffed with barbecued pork. Check it.

Ian Shaw
Wednesday 9, JZ Club, 150RMB
Ian Shaw has been a fixture of London's jazz and cabaret scene for years and has been named Best Jazz Vocalist at the BBC Jazz Awards not once but twice. The talented pianist, songwriter, comedian and humanitarian returns to Shanghai this week for a show at the brand new JZ Club.
