Chinese are flocking to buy trips to the UK after Brexit

Chinese media has reported there has been a signifiant rise in the number of tourists from Shanghai buying trips to the UK as a result of the recent weakening of the British pound following last week's Brexit vote.

The Shanghai Spring Tour company said many tourists had booked tours to Britain after the vote result was announced, saying almost all tour packages to Britian this summer have been sold out. Online booking agent Ctrip said they also noticed a significant spike in interest in their UK tours.

Chinese are looking to cash in on the better-value currency, which took a dramatic knock in the wake of Thursday's EU referedum shock and suffered further losses overnight.

“I was thinking of a holiday destination because my 13-year-old daughter will have her summer vacation soon. I had almost decided on Japan but now I think Britain may be a good idea because it may be cheaper,” one holidaymaker told Shanghai Daily.

Ctrip said the UK's new two-year multiple entry visa policy has also helped attract Chinese tourists. With the pound at its lowest for over 30 years, tourists coming to Britain to shop will be able to buy more for their buck.

It's a small positive sign after the largely negative fallout of the Brexit result, which led to the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and has left the country's stock market and political establishment in turmoil.
