Things to Do

Mobile World Congress Shanghai

Wednesday 29 June - Friday 1 July

As Jamiroquai almost sang, the future’s made of virtual reality, and you can expect lots of VR gadgets (and much more) on show at this week’s Mobile World Congress Shanghai at New International Expo Centre from Wednesday. The congress will host 70,000 attendees, 8,000 companies, and 1,000 exhibitors in seven halls for Shanghai’s largest ever mobile industry event. There are four passes on offer which range from 10,000RMB to free (if you register here first), which get you various levels of access.

Art

Lacombe: Inside Cinema

Until August 28, Shanghai Centre of Photography, 40RMB

Shanghai Center of Photography presents this outstanding solo exhibition celebrating 40 years of work by acclaimed French photographer Brigitte Lacombe. Including portraits of a whole host of leading names from the world of cinema and theatre, this exciting showing elegantly displays the remarkable work of one of Hollywood's most trusted photographers. Not to be missed.

Bars & Clubs

Yasmin

Friday 1 July, Arkham, 60RMB (with WeChat scan)

The R&B singer and DJ, best known for her 2011 hit ‘Light Up (The World) alongside Ms Dynamite, comes to Arkham on the back of a tour alongside Breakbot. She was a DJ before deciding to have a go on the mic - expect singalongs as well as a quality set.

Elsewhere, Shanghai's son of techno MHP brings his unique combination of an 'original high-tech jazz band' and techno to On Stage as part of his Folding Traces tour, and Korean sci-fi storyteller Yen Tech comes to The Shelter with an esoteric hip hop live show.

Performance

The Man of La Mancha

Until August 28, ET Space, 180-880RMB

Often called the birth of the modern novel, Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote also gave us expressions such as ‘tilting at windmills’ and the word quixotic. The 600-plus-page tome usually goes unread, however. It might take a musical to lodge these characters in the public consciousness and ask questions about fantasy, reality, and truth. This month, director Joseph Graves revives yet another in his Mandarin musical repertoire to bring us The Man of La Mancha.

Music

The Radio Dept.

Friday 1 July, MAO Livehouse, 240RMB (180RMB presale)

Scandinavian shoegaze giants The Radio Dept. return to Shanghai as part of a 2016 China tour courtesy of New Noise. Their award-winning dream pop sound is a popular one here, so expect ticket to sell quickly and for this to be a busy show. Get your Shanghai Radio Dept. tickets through Taobao.

Elsewhere, mandopop megastar Jay Chou is here for three back-to-back nights of intense pop at the Mercedes-Benz arena.
