Okay, so the long-threatened arrival of super typhoon Nepartak may have turned the last few days into something of a damp squib, but it hasn't done much to lower the temperatures in Shanghai. At least, that's the justification we're giving ourselves for having been stuffing our face with gelato from a new ice cream pop up on Wulumuqi Lu, even as the sky has been as grey as one of those McDonald's sesame cones.
Opened a few doors down from Avocado Lady on the increasingly gentrified stretch between Wuyuan and Fuxing Lus, the new space comes with the original name of Pop-up Gelato Shop and a similarly straightforward menu comprised of just five flavours. You can get one scoop for 20RMB or two for 30RMB, with varieties - made in a production facility on the outskirts of Shanghai - including passionfruit and mango, salted caramel and vanilla.
There's also a rich, indulgent 'chocolate soul' flavour on the menu, but our favourite so far is the ginger and coconut. The light blend of flavours is creamy and refreshing and the ice cream comes topped with almond flakes and, as it should, in a waffle cone, making for a very satisfying treat.
The pop-up will be there until hairy crabs come back into season - probably around mid-September - and then back again next April once we've all had our fill of furry crustaceans. They've only been open a few days, so get down there now before someone tells the Weibo hordes and hour-long queues start to form.
