Although Shanghai successfully navigated its way through July’s Typhoon Nepartak, it is still only the beginning of the typhoon season here in the city. Brace yourselves for more wet weather amidst the summer heat as the season of typhoons and thunderstorms is upon us.
August is typically known as the typhoon month - over the last five years (2011-2015), there have been six typhoons affecting Shanghai in August, compared to only one in July and two in September.
Over the same period, Shanghai has experienced torrential rainfall 32 times in August, 19 times in July and 9 times in September. Up to August 15 this year, the accumulated rainfall in Shanghai came in at 971.5mm and 520.5mm (at Xujiahui measuring station), an increase of 20 percent over the yearly average.
Authorities have also been ramping up flood prevention efforts by deploying more staff to reinforce the flood prevention walls and other emergency measures to protect flood-prone areas before typhoons hit.
So pay attention to the local weather forecasts, bring an umbrella, and don’t forget - stay stylish Shanghai.
