Wuzhen is a picturesque water town of ancient docks and waterside pavilions, adjacent to Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. If Shanghai represents modern China, Wuzhen speaks for ancient China. It is a place that truly reflects China’s heritage, culture and beauty, a place where eastern hospitality is part of the essence of life. Awarded as “the Most Favourite Chinese Scenic Area by European Tourist”, Wuzhen is a must-see water town in China.

This December, the Wuzhen International Project of Future Visual Arts, which consists of a series of activities and exhibitions related to visual arts, movies, and games, will take place in this picturesque town. The aims of this project are to build a platform for deepening communication of visual culture between China and New Zealand, display the world’s top visual art, establish a mechanism for international resource exchange and talent cultivation, and to broadly discuss multiple possibilities for the development of future visual culture from a global perspective. Complicated as this sounds, especially for tourists, there is actually something for everyone (well, almost everyone, as is explained below). So if you happen to be in the neighbourhood and have some time to kill, drop by!

If you’re a movie buff (or just obsessed with special effects) then come over to see the world’s top special effects team, Weta Workshop. The five-time Oscar winning team is presenting ten examples of their work, specially flown in from New Zealand for display to the public for the first time.

The ‘Green Screen Experience’ allows you to discover how movie special effects are really made. Take a photo with a special camera in the green screen area and get transported into a computer-generated world where you can live those childhood dreams and become your favourite superhero. If you want to have a look at something even cooler, there will be an interactive 4 NV SandMap – a scale model of an entire filmset - which has been exclusively made for exhibition in Wuzhen.

If your free time is often spent in a Games Workshop, then this is absolutely the place to be.

Throughout the exhibition, you will have a chance to get a tour of the world of the amazing Doctor Grordborts. Hundreds of authorized merchandises made by Weta Workshop will be presented, just in case you are in the mood to buy something. To list a few: the coolest Laser Gun in this universe is stored up in the secret weapon chamber of Dr. Grordborts. Portraitures of space-age pioneers and heroes are also exhibited in this area. There is also a showcase of information collected by Venus explorers, including large amount of paintings and specimens and even some Venusian weapons.

If you can tell your Hobbits from your Hobbiton, then this exhibition is just for you.

So far, six movies have been set in the Tolkienverse, fleshing out dozens of rich and beloved characters. Weta Workshop’s collection of LOTR figures will be on display, drop by feel face-to-face with life-size plastic doubles: Gandalf, the grey-bearded wizard is perhaps the simple of wisdom and kindness; Gollum, the former holder of the magic ring, is the antagonist in The Fellowship of the Ring, always waiting for a chance to steal the magic ring back from Frodo; and from the Hobbit trilogy, the last dragon recorded in the history of the Middle-earth: Smaug.

These are just a part of the lifelike models from the classic fantasy film. Let’s see how many of those sculptures make their way onto your WeChat Moments.
If you are an artist but lack financial means, the plan of Wuzhen Future Visual Arts Foundation is something you might want to consider.

As a pioneer in Chinese animation and movie special effect, 421 Workshop has realised the shortage and importance of professional talents. Hence it works with Culture Wuzhen and Weta Workshop, launching a charitable foundation for the development of future visual arts. This is a practice under perennial public welfare experience of three parties, calling upon agreements and participation among visual art industry. The foundation does not accept business operation of any kind.
Or if you are a student in visual art wishing to get to know the big names in the industry, then the exhibition also offers many exciting opportunities.
