Feast your eyes on streets of gold right here in Shanghai – well not literal gold, but rather golden autumn foliage. This year more streets than ever have gone officially unswept to allow autumn leaves to accumulate as mother nature intended, and this week is your last chance to see them is all their leafy glory.
This year, the number of unswept roads has increased to 18 from last year's 12. The idea of having roads accumulate fallen leaves came about in 2013 when local authorities experimented with ways to beautify the streets of Xuhui district.
If you're wondering where to find those golden streets, you can opt for crowd-favourite Wukang Lu for an Insta-perfect photo – likely with a WIYF ice cream after waiting arduously in line. Other streets include Hunan Lu, Yongfu Lu, Fuxing Xi Lu, Qiuyang Lu, Hengshan Lu and Yuqing Lu.
And if sanitation is of your concern, rest assured that the cleaners still clean the roads every day, leaving just the leaves untouched. The leaves will go unswept until tomorrow Thursday 8 December (unless inclement weather demands a sweeping), so get out there whilst you still can.
