JZ Festival returns this weekend, not only celebrating another quality line-up of artists across the broad spectrum of the jazz world, but also celebrating the eve of a new chapter for JZ Club as they prepare for the opening of their new venue at Found 158 on Julu Lu this Friday. Here are three acts to make sure you catch at this weekend's festival.
For funked up RnB and pop

Corinne Bailey Rae
As with Joss Stone last year, you get not one but two chances to catch JZ’s main headliner this year, with British RnB singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae playing twice in as many nights at the festival. Bailey Rae has been on the comeback trail in recent months, with a feel-good pop-infused new album – The Heart Speaks in Whispers – and a string of shows in her native UK and beyond, including a supporting slot for Stevie Wonder in London’s Hyde Park.
For modern classics

Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau
Topping Sunday’s bill on the Jazz Harbour stage, this American saxophonist/pianist duo have been performing live as a pair for years, but just put out their first album together last month. A freewheeling journey through the likes of Thelonius Monk’s ‘In Walked Bud’ and Charlie Parker’s ‘Ornithology’, Nearness showcases on record the interplaying sounds of these two accomplished musicians – a treat for jazz fans to behold live.
For a break from the jazz

Death in Vegas
A slightly surprising booking this one, but a very welcome one nonetheless – Richard Fearless’ excellent electronic act Death in Vegas headline the Earth Lounge on the Sunday with a live set. While you could be forgiven if DiV dropped off your radar in recent years, 1999 album The Contino Sessions remains a classic and May saw the first Death in Vegas album in half a decade, the well-received, dark techno-infused Transmission.
