FRIDAY 13

Not Your World Music

A top cast of local experimentalists join Cedrik Fermont at Chronus for this talk and performance. Fermont has recently completed a book on noise and experimental sound artists in South East Asia.

Chronus Art Center. 8pm-11pm. Free.

Lose Your Face

Normally late to open and late to finish, Celia opens early at 10pm for the Lose Your Face guys Jode and Beardslap to come and do their thing. House, bass and breaks with guest DJ Turner and visuals by Mike Ward before the usual late-night techno.

Celia. 10pm. 60RMB.

Shake 6 Month Anniversary

Cherry Brown, Denise Minnifield, Hazel Gould, Redic and a few special guests help celebrate half a year of Heyday's sister venue shaking up the Shanghai jazz and soul scene.

Shake. 7pm. 100RMB.

Harley's Dream

Get lost in the dream as three Shanghai bands come together in Xujiahui basement venue Harley's for a night of free psychedelia, 'dark folk' and post-rock: Mirrors, Band O' Bros (formerly Split Pants) and Pixel Prism.

Harley's Underground. 9.30pm-11.30pm. 100RMB.

Snap! Bow Bae

Shaanxi Bei Lu spot Daliah is the current home of Snap!, a space that’s as fun as the night itself – you can take the slide from the first- floor bathroom right to the dance floor, or chill out on a swing if it’s getting too much. Snap! is a night for dressing up, dancing and not taking things too seriously. And it’s proving a hit.

Daliah. 10pm-3pm. Free.

Asian Vibes present VSK

Asian Vibes present Berlin-based Italian techno maestro VSK. His music is anywhere from tough and industrial, freaky and electronic to deep and spacey. In 2010 he and his friends Conrad Van Orton and Vilix started their own label Consumer Recreation Service. He's got a background in sound engineering and years of producing and DJing under his belt.

Elevator. 10.30pm-5am. 80RMB.

Riverdance

Riverdance is a theatrical show consisting mainly of traditional Irish music and dance. Featuring Irish dancing champions Jean Butler and Michael Flatley, and with a score composed by Bill Whelan, it originated as an interval performance act during the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. It is now one the most successful dance productions in the world.

Shanghai Grand Theatre. Until Jan 15. 2pm; 7.15pm. 150-850RMB.

SATURDAY 14

Genome: Murlo

The sonic crew relocate to Elevator and bring in British DJ/producer Murlo. He specialises in a unique brand of intricate, colourful dance music – think dancehall, soca, garage, bassline, grime and more.

Elevator. 10pm-5am. 80RMB; 60RMB (presale).

Antidote presents Jon Kennedy

Jon Kennedy is proud to remind us that he was once described as 'almost certainly one of the three most talented men hailing from Stockport.' Despite being from a small northern town in the UK, within the musical realms this includes Mr Scruff (the Ninja Tune heavyweight who helped Kennedy first get noticed after he received a demo from him), and outside of it the late tennis champion Fred Perry. While Kennedy might not quite have the profile of either, he's certainly an admired man.

DADA. 10pm. Free.

Diplo

Thomas Wesley Pentz, better known as Diplo, is one of the most dynamic forces in music today. He is as much an international brand as he is a musician/DJ/producer. He’s proven himself to be a ubiquitous cultural figure, consistently bridging high and low, mainstream and underground, with remarkable tact and reverence.

Myst. 10.30pm. 380RMB.

Harley's Rock Night

Hard rockers Grindhouse hit Harley's Underground with backing from Shanghai-based Wheelhouse, Zhaojiabang and Blue Magpie.

Harley's Underground. 9.30pm-11.30pm. Free.

SUNDAY 15

Metallica

After two back-to-back shows here in 2013, Metallica are returning to China for 2017 with their Shanghai stop part of a three city tour promoting new album Hardwired... To Self-Destruct. A new batch of tickets has just been released, so don't miss out on what ought to be one of the biggest shows of the year – even this early into it.

Mercedez-Benz Arena 8pm-11pm. 480-1,980RMB.

Space Out! goes to Africa

Santo Chino's Space Out! returns to Elevator, the Sunday afternoon chill out event that's about full albums, no shoes, no phones and immersing yourself in music. This time Raphael Ingalls presents Centafrique: Chants a Penser. Raph calls it 'the African response to doom metal.' It features the music of the Gbaya people, a population that has been displaced and at war since the 1800s.

Elevator. 5pm-10pm. Free.

NOIShanghai LXXIX

Torturing Nurse is joined by Bai Mengwei (formerly of Nonplus of Color) for a collaborative set as part of the latest NOIShanghai showcase at Chair Club. Also on the bill are Huang Yongqiang, Delhi Swim Club (listen below), Yu Yintang (no, not the venue – different characters), Ganzfeld Lab, AcidGuaGua Temple and Fan Wenzhi. Harsh noise and experimental sounds are the order of the day.

Chair Club. 7.30pm. 100RMB.

Andy Warhol: Shadows

Pop art master Andy Warhol's work returns to Shanghai as the Yuz Museum hosts pieces from his mysterious Shadows series. The silk-screened canvas panels are shown end to end in the biggest single installation of the series since the 1970s, and the first in Mainland China.

Yuz Museum. Until Jan 15. 80RMB.
