That's right, Bacardi No Commission is coming to Shanghai. Curated by New York hip-hop artist/producer and The Dean Collection founder, Swizz Beatz, in partnership with Bacardi, Shanghai's No Commission event will be held at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre from Saturday 7 to Sunday 9 April.
Essentially a big art fair, Bacardi No Commission is an event designed to give artists the opportunity to sell their works directly to buyers without having to pay any commission fees to galleries. 'Visitors to No Commission will experience art and music, technology and storytelling, immersion and exploration, and a picture of the future in the present,' explained Swizz Beatz.
The Shanghai event will also feature live music from the likes of DJs Wordy, Dirty Class, Marsix, Luie Louie, Runna, Tomas Bray, Fader One and Tsuano – with Swizz Beatz himself also scheduled to play on the Sunday (if granted clearance). Also watch this space for potential announcements of more acts.
China can often prove to be a tough market for events such as this, with censorship and regulations being a thorn in the side of overseas artists and performers. 'There are different rules and approvals, and every artwork has to be approved by the government,' Beatz said of bringing the event to Shanghai while speaking recently at an Advertising Week Europe session. Luckily, Bacardi No Commission got the green light.
Last year saw no-commission art fairs held in both London and the South Bronx, while the concept was initially trailed by Beatz in Miami back in 2015. Along with the event here in Shanghai, this year will also see Bacardi No Commission fairs held in Berlin and Miami.
