Happy Year of the Rooster from Time Out Shanghai! Even though the city will quieten down post-mass exodus, various observances and traditions will roll on until Saturday 11’s Lantern Festival, so take a few moments to get Rooster-ready with our quick guide. Here’s what you need to know if you were born in the Year of the Rooster.
Your rooster horoscope
If you were born in 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993 or 2005, this is your year, so congratulations, right? Well, not entirely, as Chinese astrology dictates that the year of one’s zodiac sign is actually likely to be their most unlucky in the 12-year cycle, so you’ll need to be on your best behaviour.
Numbers
The numbers 1, 3 and 9 (and combinations of them) are expected to bring bad luck for Roosters this year, while the numbers 5, 7, 8 will be sources of better fortune. Err on the side of caution and opt for seven pints instead of one. Avoid threesomes.

Colours
Gold, brown and yellow are your go-to colours, while anything red could be an inauspicious omen. Be sure to splash out on gold jewellery, and avoid eye contact with Chinese flags.
Directions
Even directions aren’t safe. Everything easterly will be shrouded in bad luck – potentially problematic. The south and southeast may hold more success, however, so Shanghai should be okay.

Romance
If you’re looking for love, try cosying up with an Ox or, even in spite of previous dealings with your exes, a Snake. Steer clear of romantic engagements with Rabbits, Horses, Rats and Pigs.
