FRIDAY

Shanghai Indie

Two of our Shanghai bands to watch in 2017 - art rockers Dream Can and Nonplus of Color - come together at YYT with support from Fuzhou-founded 尺口MP, who cite The Cribs and The Strokes among their main influences.

Yuyintang 851 Kaixuan Lu. 9pm. 60RMB.

The fin.

Japanese rockers The fin. are New Noise's first show of 2017 and one of the first in the newly renovated MAO Livehouse. The young quartet cite WashedOut and Toro y Moi as influences, but their breezy guitar-laden pop sound owes more to the likes of Beach Fossils and Phoenix and if you didn't know otherwise, you'd probably guess they were from California rather than Kobe.

MAO Livehouse 308 Chongqing Nan Lu. 9pm. 150RMB; 120RMB (presale).

Tarra Conner Jones

Retro cocktail lounge and live music bar Heyday and swinging soul joint Shake introduce a new singer to their roster: Tarra Conner Jones. The Florida native has drawn comparisons to the likes of Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan and is already knocking audiences off their feet here in Shanghai with her varied repertoire of jazz and soul classics.

Heyday 50 Taian Lu. 9.30pm. 60RMB.

12 inches of Fun x Holly Sh*t presents Fantastic Man

Melbourne-bred Berlin-based Mic Newman aka Fantastic Man might be one of the most interesting house producers in current years. His releases all share an attraction for the psychedelic, the trippy, the drawn out musical journey. Newman describes his DJ sets as ‘good acidy tribal percussive workouts’. He's back by popular demand after past Shanghai sets at The Shelter and Lola. Support from fantastic four of Tobias Patrick, Lindberg, Charp and Thoma Cher.

Elevator 218 Xinle Lu. 10.30pm. 70RMB.

The Lego Batman Movie

In this action-packed spinoff of breakout star of 2014 The Lego Movie, Bruce Wayne must not only deal with the criminals of Gotham City, but also the responsibility of raising a boy he adopted.

SATURDAY

Shanghai 2002

French artists Bettina Rheims and Serge Bramly showcase a series of photographs aiming to capture the unique and varied stories of Shanghai's women. In 2002, the artists set out to examine the preconceptions of Shanghainese women, both in the West and within China. From delicate creatures to tricky wives, relentless professionals to ardent mothers, the photographs shed light on the many stereotypes, past and present, which have encumbered the women of Shanghai.

Shanghai Gallery of Art 3 Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu. Until Mar 25. Free.

MNDSGN

Elevator's first major hip-hop show sees Xiamen-based Beatween bring in Stones Throw affiliate and cosmic funk producer MNDSGN (say it 'mind design'). His sublime 2016 album Body Wash is full of warm, ‘80s RnB-inspired grooves. Support from Kota, ollo-MAM, Jiaming and Knopha.

Elevator 218 Xinle Lu. 10pm. 130RMB; 100RMB (presale).

Answer Code Request

Patrick Gräser was essentially a complete unknown when he released his Subway Into EP in 2011 under the Answer Code Request moniker. It wasn’t until Subway Into, a four-track exploration of ambient techno sounds on the Hard Wax label, that his talents really came to the fore. Since then, Answer Code Request has become a familiar name to anyone with even a passing interest in the German techno scene, thanks to a string of acclaimed releases and Gräser's residency at legendary Berlin club Berghain, a position he took up just one year after his debut EP.

Celia 298 Xingfu Lu. 10pm. 100RMB; 60RMB (presale).

Robert Parker

Robert Parker is a electronic producer from Stockholm, Sweden. He is one of the main players in the synthwave (aka retrowave) scene that has been rapidly growing in popularity over the past few years. His style takes elements from '80s music and movies, as well as from French house and disco. Expect catchy and danceable tracks with impedacble style.

DADA 115 Xingfu Lu. 10pm. Free.

SUNDAY

A three-dimensional contemporary art performance by artist Duan Yingmei, featuring spontaneous interaction between the artist, audience and objects. Live performance will start on Saturday 4 March from 3pm to 6pm and continue on Sunday 5 March from 10am to 6pm.

Fathoms
