The festival runs between March 10-22, and will include more than 30 events, speakers, workshops and debates. The full programme can be found online now at m-restaurantgroup.com. As ever, it all looks cracking, but here are our picks of must-sees (all to be held at Glam):

American author of The Joy Luck Club will unveil her latest work, Where The Past Begins, which is to be published in October. Tan will read parts of her book and discuss her unique approaches to writing - not one to be missed.

March 12, 2pm, 85RMB (40RMB for students).

Rob Schmitz

The journalist and former Peace Corp volunteer here in China will discuss his book The Street of Eternal Happiness, covering China's economic boom from just the viewpoint of a single street. A fascinating and very human take on Shanghai's staggering growth.

The Great FT Debate: Has Western Democracy Been Discredited?

What the hell happened in 2016? If you're still reeling from the year the improbable became real, get yourself down to this discussion, where a panel of experts from the Financial Times will discuss the twin shocks of Brexit and President Trump, and what they mean for China and global politics.

March 12, 4pm, 80RMB (40RMB for students).

Haiku Workshop

Japanese writer Miho Kinnas will lead this workshop, teaching the art of Haiku, compact, succinct Japanese poems. A rare and exciting opportunity to explore this genre and learn to create and critique your own.
