Shanghai Metro is slowly (very slowly) answering our prayers for a 24-hour train service after further extending its operating hours once more. Originally planning the extension for earlier this month, having last extended services on major lines back in November, the authorities have finally given the go ahead to increase the running hours a little more starting this Friday (April 28). Here's a quick summary of the changes that'll make your journey home less of an ordeal and save you some taxi fare.

Weekday services
In order to accommodate popular demand, services on Line 10 and 16 will be extended every day of the week. Line 10 is operating an extra 25 minutes into the night, and Line 16 is adding another 30 minutes.
Weekend services
On Friday and Saturday nights, services will be running an extra hour to 90 minutes on Lines 1, 2, 7, 8, and 9. That means that the last trains are leaving as late as midnight instead of the usual 10.30pm.
There are exceptions to the rule however, as the extension doesn't apply to certain sections of Line 2, 7, and 9. These are: Guanglan Lu to Pudong International Airport (Line 2); Meilan Lake to Qihua Lu (Line 7); Songshan Nan Station to Sheshan (Line 9).
While this is obviously great news, there is one teeny downside to late-night riding: you can expect longer intervals of between ten to 20 minutes between trains during those extended hours. That said, you now have time to stay out for just 'one more' drink. See below for an updated services map.
