I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. Here are three hot (or should we say cold?) new spots around town to grab a scoop.
Sober Café
From left to right; PDT, Black&White, Little Italy
Owned by the same team behind Speak Low, Sober Café is part of the new three-in-one Sober Company space. Apart from small plates and all-day brunch, the café also offers a series of soft-serve ice cream with intriguing flavours. Try the Black&White (30RMB), a mix of two of the classic soft-serve flavours – vanilla with mascarpone, and coconut milk with bamboo charcoal.
Sober Café is at 99 Yandang Lu, near Nanchang Lu, Huangpu district.
Lick it
Homemade sorbets at Lick it
On the corner of Changle Lu and Shaanxi Nan Lu, Lick it prides itself on sorbets and ice cream designed by Hungarian chef Jenő Rácz of Michelin-starred Taian Table. With a small selection of three sorbets and one ice cream (all 24RMB per scoop), at the moment, Lick it is more like a vegan-friendly pop-up. However, unlike many other places that use sweetened syrup for sorbets, Lick it uses only fresh frozen fruits making for a sweet, guilt-free treat. Topped off with chocolate coated popping sugar and Oreo bits, the Roasted Cocoa sorbet proves it's not necessary to use eggs or dairy to make a rich chocolate treat with a smooth, creamy texture.
To keep things fresh, Rácz will introduce a new flavour to the menu fortnightly. Look out cheesecake fans, we've got a hot tip that it's the next flavour on the menu.
Lick it is at 162 Shaanxi Nan Lu, near Changle Lu, Jingan district.
Bonus
Bonus' salted caramel and 'chocolate soul' scoops
We are super grateful that this gelato pop-up has returned to its 2016 temporary home beside the Avocado Lady. Last year, Bonus' little spot offered just five kinds of tasty scoops, but this year the team has upped it to eight awesome flavours on offer at a time, rotating in new ones in every so often. Better yet, it's cheap: get two scoops in a cone, like this salted caramel and 'chocolate soul' combo, for 30RMB.
You'll always find interesting flavours at Bonus, from salted egg yolk to pine nut and olive oil. For a surprisingly pleasant twist, try the sweet, floral rose and clove scoop.
Bonus is at 276 Wulumuqi Zhong Lu, near Wuyuan Lu, Xuhui district.
