Good news for all fans of Australian authors in China – the tenth anniversary edition of Australian Writers Week in China is back in May, bringing a series of prize-winning authors for a series of free talks across the country.
Through partnerships with local publishers, retailers, educational and cultural institutions, the decade-old event has brought a series of renowned writers to China to discuss literary topics, with events this year in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xian, Guangzhou, Hohhot, and Harbin.
Sadly only one speaker is coming to Shanghai, but the Man Booker Prize winner Tom Keneally will be giving two talks here, both free and set to be fascinating.
The first is on Tuesday 16 May at Shanghai Library, where Keneally will discuss the story behind Schindler’s List, based on his experience of writing Schindler's Ark, the Booker Prize winning novel based on the story of a Holocaust survivor. His second discussion will consider the craft of adapting history into text and film. It is also free and bilingual, and being held at Sinan Mansions.
Other speakers across China during the week include Pulitzer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks, young adult fiction writer John Marsden, and highly acclaimed Indigenous children’s author and illustrator Bronwyn Bancroft. All talks are free, but some require attendees to RSVP. Click 'read more' to find the full programme at the Australian Writers Week website.
