A pop-up store 了不起的你 (The Greatest You) has sprung up at the K11 Art Mall, offering a one-off chance to nab some unique statement pieces by two up-and-coming Chinese labels: C.J. Yao and Awaylee.
Choice is limited, but the clothes make an impression. The two labels offer very different interpretations of contemporary Chinese fashion. Home grown C.J. Yao is a real Shanghai dragon, dominated by loud punchy colours and strong geometric shapes. The pieces are clearly influenced by vintage styles from the '20s to the large lapels and flared trousers of the '80s.
Awaylee on the other hand, trades hard edges for abundant frills, lace and neutral colours. Gentle silhouettes characterise the Xian 仙 or 'Fairy' aesthetic which she favours. It’s a hyper-feminine look that perhaps is not to everyone’s tastes, but it is nonetheless a highly creative line of garments.
So what about the price tag? 'The Greatest You' is by no means a thrift store dollar bin (this is K11 don't forget) but there are still some decent bargains to be had. Ignore the prices on the labels and check with staff to see how low they’re prepared to go. Discounts on C.J. Yao range from 30 percent to 50 percent while Awaylee stretches from 60 percent all the way to 80 percent off the original price.
