The City of Life and Death
Dir Lu Chuan, 2009; War
Every month Time Out screens one of the greatest Chinese films of all time at Glam, M on the Bund, with complimentary gourmet popcorn and specially tailored drinks. This month's film is City of Life and Death.
This big-budget blockbuster recasts the horror of the Nanjing Massacre as a cinematic spectacle. Full of sound and fury, the brawn and technical brilliance of the film’s relentless action set-pieces and sentimentalising humanism have borne comparisons to Stephen Spielberg’s Schindler’s List and divided Chinese audiences for its sympathetic portrayal of a Japanese soldier.
Entry is free but you need to reserve a seat. Send 'Film' to our WeChat (timeoutshanghai) to book your spot.
