It’s called The Crave – a longing in your stomach that can only be satisfied by one thing: White Castle. Since it emerged in the early 20th century, millions of Americans have experienced it. It’s what drove Harold and Kumar on their pilgrimage for sliders. It has even got a Hall of Fame. And now Shanghai the latest to get The Crave.
White Castle’s China flagship location is opening its doors on Maoming Bei Lu beside other big American names like Goose Island Brewhouse and Hard Rock Cafe. The brand is bringing over its world famous fast-food favourites like The Original Slider® and other tasty miniburgers, alongside a few new sliders created just for China branches.
So what’s the big deal? Well, White Castle was the world’s first fast-food burger chain. That’s right, it’s even older than Mc D’s, with the team’s first burgers hitting the flat top grill in 1921. They’ve been serving The Original Slider – a two-inch grilled beef patty on a square bun with grilled onions and pickles – for nearly 100 years. It was even deemed the ‘the most influential burger of all time’ by Time magazine just a few years ago. Kind of a big deal.
In just a few days, you can find out what the White Castle hype is all about. You’ll be able to chow down on classic sliders like original, cheese, and veggie; plus double original and double cheese. All of them come with chopped grilled onions – it’s a big part of that White Castle flavour.
After you’ve wolfed down a couple of originals, be sure to give two special Shanghai sliders a try – after all, you can only get them in China. The Spicy Tofu Slider is an ode to mapo tofu: a classic beef patty topped with a soft slab of grilled tofu and spicy mala pepper sauce; while The Cherry Blossom Slider has slices of smoked duck smothered in a sweet and tart cherry sauce.
Now, of course you can order just one slider, but that would be a rookie move. Best to go for the meal – for 42-48RMB you can mix and match three sliders with a drink and crinkle cut fries (or upgrade to sweet potato fries); or get two double sliders for 52RMB.
Last up, if you love The Original as much as so many a White Castle-goer do, never fulfilled by only a few little sliders… you can take home a Crave Case.
