John 16

New International Version

16 “All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy

16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”

17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”

31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Nehemiah 8

New International Version

8 1 all the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded for Israel.

So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.

Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.

Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

The Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed the people in the Law while the people were standing there. They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read.

Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.

10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

11 The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.”

12 Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.

13 On the second day of the month, the heads of all the families, along with the priests and the Levites, gathered around Ezra the teacher to give attention to the words of the Law. 14 They found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded through Moses, that the Israelites were to live in temporary shelters during the festival of the seventh month 15 and that they should proclaim this word and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem: “Go out into the hill country and bring back branches from olive and wild olive trees, and from myrtles, palms and shade trees, to make temporary shelters”—as it is written.

16 So the people went out and brought back branches and built themselves temporary shelters on their own roofs, in their courtyards, in the courts of the house of God and in the square by the Water Gate and the one by the Gate of Ephraim. 17 The whole company that had returned from exile built temporary shelters and lived in them. From the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated it like this. And their joy was very great.

18 Day after day, from the first day to the last, Ezra read from the Book of the Law of God. They celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation, there was an assembly.

Psalm 25

New International Version

Psalm 25

Of David.

In you, Lord my God,    I put my trust.

I trust in you;    do not let me be put to shame,    nor let my enemies triumph over me.No one who hopes in you    will ever be put to shame, but shame will come on those    who are treacherous without cause.

Show me your ways, Lord,    teach me your paths.Guide me in your truth and teach me,    for you are God my Savior,    and my hope is in you all day long.Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love,    for they are from of old.Do not remember the sins of my youth    and my rebellious ways;according to your love remember me,    for you, Lord, are good.

Good and upright is the Lord;    therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.He guides the humble in what is right    and teaches them his way.10 All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful    toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.11 For the sake of your name, Lord,    forgive my iniquity, though it is great.

12 Who, then, are those who fear the Lord?    He will instruct them in the ways they should choose.13 They will spend their days in prosperity,    and their descendants will inherit the land.14 The Lord confides in those who fear him;    he makes his covenant known to them.15 My eyes are ever on the Lord,    for only he will release my feet from the snare.

16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,    for I am lonely and afflicted.17 Relieve the troubles of my heart    and free me from my anguish.18 Look on my affliction and my distress    and take away all my sins.19 See how numerous are my enemies    and how fiercely they hate me!

20 Guard my life and rescue me;    do not let me be put to shame,    for I take refuge in you.21 May integrity and uprightness protect me,    because my hope, Lord, is in you.

22 Deliver Israel, O God,    from all their troubles!

Lamentations 5

New International Version

Remember, Lord, what has happened to us;    look, and see our disgrace. Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers,    our homes to foreigners. We have become fatherless,    our mothers are widows. We must buy the water we drink;    our wood can be had only at a price. Those who pursue us are at our heels;    we are weary and find no rest.We submitted to Egypt and Assyria    to get enough bread. Our ancestors sinned and are no more,    and we bear their punishment.Slaves rule over us,    and there is no one to free us from their hands. We get our bread at the risk of our lives    because of the sword in the desert.10 Our skin is hot as an oven,    feverish from hunger.11 Women have been violated in Zion,    and virgins in the towns of Judah.12 Princes have been hung up by their hands;    elders are shown no respect.13 Young men toil at the millstones;    boys stagger under loads of wood.14 The elders are gone from the city gate;    the young men have stopped their music.15 Joy is gone from our hearts;    our dancing has turned to mourning.16 The crown has fallen from our head.    Woe to us, for we have sinned!17 Because of this our hearts are faint,    because of these things our eyes grow dim18 for Mount Zion, which lies desolate,    with jackals prowling over it.

19 You, Lord, reign forever;    your throne endures from generation to generation.20 Why do you always forget us?    Why do you forsake us so long?21 Restore us to yourself, Lord, that we may return;    renew our days as of old22 unless you have utterly rejected us    and are angry with us beyond measure.
