THOUGHTS FROM THE PASTOR
FULL OF GRACE AND TRUTH
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14.
This last phrase of this verse about Jesus is captivating for me. He is full of grace and truth. He is not 50% full of grace and 50% with truth. He is neither 70% to 30% nor 40% to 60% in grace and truth. He is 100% full of grace and 100% full of truth. He doesn’t dilute the truth to show grace but He is the Truth himself. Grace and truth do not compete rather they work together. I have seen many incidences where we compromise the truth to show grace and in other cases where we are so focus on the truth that we miss the grace of God. This is often manifested when we see a brother or sister going astray and for the sake of peace we look the other way pretending that nothing is happening. The reverse is the case when we see such a thing that we hammer the truth so much, condemning and shooting down our fellow wounded soldier that we miss grace completely. Both approaches are wrong. Jesus demonstrated this balance perfectly in the story of the woman who was caught in the act of adultery (see John 8:1-11). They caught the woman in the act which means that the man was caught too but they let him off the hook instead only the woman was brought out to be stoned to death. There is no space to expand this here. God hates partiality. Back to our focus for today. Jesus asked the people who were ready to stone her to death a deafening question in verse 7: “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” They all left one after the other. When we understand that we are all work in progress, we will be very gracious to one another. Jesus told her in verse 11 “Neither do I condemn you”. However, He didn’t stop there. He continued “go, and from now on sin no more.” Many times, we are gracious but we neglect the truth. We must always tell people the truth but in love. We achieve this by telling people the truth in love. Grace doesn’t diminish sin and the penalty of sin instead it reveals the truth and empowers believers to say no to ungodliness (see Titus 2:11). These grace and truth came from Jesus himself as stated in John 1:17 “grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” and Jesus is the truth himself (see John 14:6). I pray that you will be full of grace and truth unto overflowing that the world around you will experience Jesus, who is the truth and the saving grace He brings. May the grace of God empowers you for greater kingdom impact.
Blessings,
Pastor Favour Ibom
