The Parable of the Sower

13 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.”

The Purpose of the Parables

10 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:

“‘“You will indeed hear but never understand,    and you will indeed see but never perceive.”15 For this people's heart has grown dull,    and with their ears they can barely hear,    and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes    and hear with their earsand understand with their heart    and turn, and I would heal them.’

16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. 17 For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

The Parable of the Sower Explained

18 “Hear then the parable of the sower: 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. 20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

The Parable of the Weeds

24 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, 25 but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. 26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. 27 And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

The Mustard Seed and the Leaven

31 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. 32 It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”

33 He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”

Prophecy and Parables

34 All these things Jesus said to the crowds in parables; indeed, he said nothing to them without a parable. 35 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet:

“I will open my mouth in parables;    I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.”

The Parable of the Weeds Explained

36 Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.” 37 He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, 42 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

The Parable of the Hidden Treasure

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

The Parable of the Pearl of Great Value

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

The Parable of the Net

47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. 48 When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

New and Old Treasures

51 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

53 And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there, 54 and coming to his hometown he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” 58 And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.

Tell the Coming Generation

A Maskil of Asaph.

78 Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;    incline your ears to the words of my mouth!I will open my mouth in a parable;    I will utter dark sayings from of old, things that we have heard and known,    that our fathers have told us.We will not hide them from their children,    but tell to the coming generationthe glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,    and the wonders that he has done.

He established a testimony in Jacob    and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers    to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them,    the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children,    so that they should set their hope in Godand not forget the works of God,    but keep his commandments;and that they should not be like their fathers,    a stubborn and rebellious generation,a generation whose heart was not steadfast,    whose spirit was not faithful to God.

The Ephraimites, armed with the bow,    turned back on the day of battle.10 They did not keep God's covenant,    but refused to walk according to his law.11 They forgot his works    and the wonders that he had shown them.12 In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders    in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.13 He divided the sea and let them pass through it,    and made the waters stand like a heap.14 In the daytime he led them with a cloud,    and all the night with a fiery light.15 He split rocks in the wilderness    and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.16 He made streams come out of the rock    and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

17 Yet they sinned still more against him,    rebelling against the Most High in the desert.18 They tested God in their heart    by demanding the food they craved.19 They spoke against God, saying,    “Can God spread a table in the wilderness?20 He struck the rock so that water gushed out    and streams overflowed. Can he also give bread    or provide meat for his people?”

21 Therefore, when the Lord heard, he was full of wrath;    a fire was kindled against Jacob;    his anger rose against Israel,22 because they did not believe in God    and did not trust his saving power.23 Yet he commanded the skies above    and opened the doors of heaven,24 and he rained down on them manna to eat    and gave them the grain of heaven.25 Man ate of the bread of the angels;    he sent them food in abundance.26 He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens,    and by his power he led out the south wind;27 he rained meat on them like dust,    winged birds like the sand of the seas;28 he let them fall in the midst of their camp,    all around their dwellings.29 And they ate and were well filled,    for he gave them what they craved.30 But before they had satisfied their craving,    while the food was still in their mouths,31 the anger of God rose against them,    and he killed the strongest of them    and laid low the young men of Israel.

32 In spite of all this, they still sinned;    despite his wonders, they did not believe.33 So he made their days vanish like a breath,    and their years in terror.34 When he killed them, they sought him;    they repented and sought God earnestly.35 They remembered that God was their rock,    the Most High God their redeemer.36 But they flattered him with their mouths;    they lied to him with their tongues.37 Their heart was not steadfast toward him;    they were not faithful to his covenant.38 Yet he, being compassionate,    atoned for their iniquity    and did not destroy them;he restrained his anger often    and did not stir up all his wrath.39 He remembered that they were but flesh,    a wind that passes and comes not again.40 How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness    and grieved him in the desert!41 They tested God again and again    and provoked the Holy One of Israel.42 They did not remember his power    or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,43 when he performed his signs in Egypt    and his marvels in the fields of Zoan.44 He turned their rivers to blood,    so that they could not drink of their streams.45 He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them,    and frogs, which destroyed them.46 He gave their crops to the destroying locust    and the fruit of their labor to the locust.47 He destroyed their vines with hail    and their sycamores with frost.48 He gave over their cattle to the hail    and their flocks to thunderbolts.49 He let loose on them his burning anger,    wrath, indignation, and distress,    a company of destroying angels.50 He made a path for his anger;    he did not spare them from death,    but gave their lives over to the plague.51 He struck down every firstborn in Egypt,    the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.52 Then he led out his people like sheep    and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.53 He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid,    but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.54 And he brought them to his holy land,    to the mountain which his right hand had won.55 He drove out nations before them;    he apportioned them for a possession    and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

56 Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God    and did not keep his testimonies,57 but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers;    they twisted like a deceitful bow.58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places;    they moved him to jealousy with their idols.59 When God heard, he was full of wrath,    and he utterly rejected Israel.60 He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh,    the tent where he dwelt among mankind,61 and delivered his power to captivity,    his glory to the hand of the foe.62 He gave his people over to the sword    and vented his wrath on his heritage.63 Fire devoured their young men,    and their young women had no marriage song.64 Their priests fell by the sword,    and their widows made no lamentation.65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,    like a strong man shouting because of wine.66 And he put his adversaries to rout;    he put them to everlasting shame.

67 He rejected the tent of Joseph;    he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,    Mount Zion, which he loves.69 He built his sanctuary like the high heavens,    like the earth, which he has founded forever.70 He chose David his servant    and took him from the sheepfolds;71 from following the nursing ewes he brought him    to shepherd Jacob his people,    Israel his inheritance.72 With upright heart he shepherded them    and guided them with his skillful hand.

Isaiah 37

English Standard Version

Hezekiah Seeks Isaiah's Help

37 As soon as King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the LordAnd he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and the senior priests, covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz. They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, ‘This day is a day of distress, of rebuke, and of disgrace; children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth. It may be that the Lord your God will hear the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke the words that the Lord your God has heard; therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’”

When the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah, Isaiah said to them, “Say to your master, ‘Thus says the Lord: Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the young men of the king of Assyria have reviled me. Behold, I will put a spirit in him, so that he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land, and I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.’”

The Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, for he had heard that the king had left Lachish. Now the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Cush, “He has set out to fight against you.” And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10 “Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. 11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered? 12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, the nations that my fathers destroyed, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar? 13 Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, the king of Hena, or the king of Ivvah?’”

Hezekiah's Prayer for Deliverance

14 Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord15 And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord16 “O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth. 17 Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. 18 Truly, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their lands, 19 and have cast their gods into the fire. For they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed. 20 So now, O Lord our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone are the Lord.”

Sennacherib's Fall

21 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Because you have prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria, 22 this is the word that the Lord has spoken concerning him:

“‘She despises you, she scorns you—    the virgin daughter of Zion;she wags her head behind you—    the daughter of Jerusalem.

23 “‘Whom have you mocked and reviled?    Against whom have you raised your voiceand lifted your eyes to the heights?    Against the Holy One of Israel!24 By your servants you have mocked the Lord,    and you have said, With my many chariotsI have gone up the heights of the mountains,    to the far recesses of Lebanon,to cut down its tallest cedars,    its choicest cypresses,to come to its remotest height,    its most fruitful forest.25 I dug wells    and drank waters,to dry up with the sole of my foot    all the streams of Egypt.

26 “‘Have you not heard    that I determined it long ago?I planned from days of old    what now I bring to pass, that you should make fortified cities    crash into heaps of ruins,27 while their inhabitants, shorn of strength,    are dismayed and confounded, and have become like plants of the field    and like tender grass, like grass on the housetops,    blighted before it is grown.

28 “‘I know your sitting down    and your going out and coming in,    and your raging against me.29 Because you have raged against me    and your complacency has come to my ears,I will put my hook in your nose    and my bit in your mouth, and I will turn you back on the way    by which you came.’

30 “And this shall be the sign for you: this year you shall eat what grows of itself, and in the second year what springs from that. Then in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 31 And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward. 32 For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

33 “Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city or shoot an arrow there or come before it with a shield or cast up a siege mound against it. 34 By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and he shall not come into this city, declares the Lord35 For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.”

36 And the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. 37 Then Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and returned home and lived at Nineveh. 38 And as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, struck him down with the sword. And after they escaped into the land of Ararat, Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

Jeremiah 5

English Standard Version

Jerusalem Refused to Repent

Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem,    look and take note!Search her squares to see    if you can find a man,one who does justice    and seeks truth, that I may pardon her.Though they say, “As the Lord lives,”    yet they swear falsely.Lord, do not your eyes look for truth? You have struck them down,    but they felt no anguish;you have consumed them,    but they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock;    they have refused to repent.

Then I said, “These are only the poor;    they have no sense;for they do not know the way of the Lord,    the justice of their God.I will go to the great    and will speak to them, for they know the way of the Lord,    the justice of their God.”But they all alike had broken the yoke;    they had burst the bonds.

Therefore a lion from the forest shall strike them down;    a wolf from the desert shall devastate them.A leopard is watching their cities;    everyone who goes out of them shall be torn in pieces, because their transgressions are many,    their apostasies are great.

“How can I pardon you?    Your children have forsaken me    and have sworn by those who are no gods. When I fed them to the full,    they committed adultery    and trooped to the houses of whores. They were well-fed, lusty stallions,    each neighing for his neighbor's wife.Shall I not punish them for these things?declares the Lord;    and shall I not avenge myself    on a nation such as this?

10 “Go up through her vine rows and destroy,    but make not a full end;strip away her branches,    for they are not the Lord's.11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah    have been utterly treacherous to me,declares the Lord.12 They have spoken falsely of the Lord    and have said, ‘He will do nothing;no disaster will come upon us,    nor shall we see sword or famine.13 The prophets will become wind;    the word is not in them. Thus shall it be done to them!’”

The Lord Proclaims Judgment

14 Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts:“Because you have spoken this word, behold, I am making my words in your mouth a fire,    and this people wood, and the fire shall consume them.15 Behold, I am bringing against you    a nation from afar, O house of Israel, declares the Lord. It is an enduring nation;    it is an ancient nation,a nation whose language you do not know,    nor can you understand what they say.16 Their quiver is like an open tomb;    they are all mighty warriors.17 They shall eat up your harvest and your food;    they shall eat up your sons and your daughters;they shall eat up your flocks and your herds;    they shall eat up your vines and your fig trees;your fortified cities in which you trust    they shall beat down with the sword.”

18 “But even in those days, declares the Lord, I will not make a full end of you. 19 And when your people say, ‘Why has the Lord our God done all these things to us?’ you shall say to them, ‘As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your land, so you shall serve foreigners in a land that is not yours.’”

20 Declare this in the house of Jacob;    proclaim it in Judah:21 “Hear this, O foolish and senseless people,    who have eyes, but see not,    who have ears, but hear not.22 Do you not fear me? declares the Lord.    Do you not tremble before me?I placed the sand as the boundary for the sea,    a perpetual barrier that it cannot pass;though the waves toss, they cannot prevail;    though they roar, they cannot pass over it.23 But this people has a stubborn and rebellious heart;    they have turned aside and gone away.24 They do not say in their hearts,    ‘Let us fear the Lord our God,who gives the rain in its season,    the autumn rain and the spring rain, and keeps for us    the weeks appointed for the harvest.’25 Your iniquities have turned these away,    and your sins have kept good from you.26 For wicked men are found among my people;    they lurk like fowlers lying in wait. They set a trap;    they catch men.27 Like a cage full of birds,    their houses are full of deceit;therefore they have become great and rich;28     they have grown fat and sleek. They know no bounds in deeds of evil;    they judge not with justicethe cause of the fatherless, to make it prosper,    and they do not defend the rights of the needy.29 Shall I not punish them for these things?declares the Lord,    and shall I not avenge myself    on a nation such as this?”

30 An appalling and horrible thing    has happened in the land:31 the prophets prophesy falsely,    and the priests rule at their direction;my people love to have it so,    but what will you do when the end comes?
