The Widow's Offering

21 Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, “As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” And they asked him, “Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” And he said, “See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once.”

Jesus Foretells Wars and Persecution

10 Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. 12 But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake. 13 This will be your opportunity to bear witness. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. 16 You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. 17 You will be hated by all for my name's sake. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By your endurance you will gain your lives.

Jesus Foretells Destruction of Jerusalem

20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, 22 for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. 23 Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Coming of the Son of Man

25 “And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

29 And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

Watch Yourselves

34 “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet. 38 And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him.

Asa's Religious Reforms

15 The Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded, and he went out to meet Asa and said to him, “Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: The Lord is with you while you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you. For a long time Israel was without the true God, and without a teaching priest and without law, but when in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him, he was found by them. In those times there was no peace to him who went out or to him who came in, for great disturbances afflicted all the inhabitants of the lands. They were broken in pieces. Nation was crushed by nation and city by city, for God troubled them with every sort of distress. But you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded.”

As soon as Asa heard these words, the prophecy of Azariah the son of Oded, he took courage and put away the detestable idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin and from the cities that he had taken in the hill country of Ephraim, and he repaired the altar of the Lord that was in front of the vestibule of the house of the LordAnd he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and those from Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simeon who were residing with them, for great numbers had deserted to him from Israel when they saw that the Lord his God was with him. 10 They were gathered at Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of the reign of Asa. 11 They sacrificed to the Lord on that day from the spoil that they had brought 700 oxen and 7,000 sheep. 12 And they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul, 13 but that whoever would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, should be put to death, whether young or old, man or woman. 14 They swore an oath to the Lord with a loud voice and with shouting and with trumpets and with horns. 15 And all Judah rejoiced over the oath, for they had sworn with all their heart and had sought him with their whole desire, and he was found by them, and the Lord gave them rest all around.

16 Even Maacah, his mother, King Asa removed from being queen mother because she had made a detestable image for Asherah. Asa cut down her image, crushed it, and burned it at the brook Kidron. 17 But the high places were not taken out of Israel. Nevertheless, the heart of Asa was wholly true all his days. 18 And he brought into the house of God the sacred gifts of his father and his own sacred gifts, silver, and gold, and vessels. 19 And there was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of the reign of Asa.

An Oracle Concerning Egypt

19 An oracle concerning Egypt.

Behold, the Lord is riding on a swift cloud    and comes to Egypt;and the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence,    and the heart of the Egyptians will melt within them. And I will stir up Egyptians against Egyptians,    and they will fight, each against another    and each against his neighbor,    city against city, kingdom against kingdom;and the spirit of the Egyptians within them will be emptied out,    and I will confound their counsel;and they will inquire of the idols and the sorcerers,    and the mediums and the necromancers;and I will give over the Egyptians    into the hand of a hard master, and a fierce king will rule over them,    declares the Lord God of hosts.

And the waters of the sea will be dried up,    and the river will be dry and parched, and its canals will become foul,    and the branches of Egypt's Nile will diminish and dry up,    reeds and rushes will rot away. There will be bare places by the Nile,    on the brink of the Nile, and all that is sown by the Nile will be parched,    will be driven away, and will be no more. The fishermen will mourn and lament,    all who cast a hook in the Nile;and they will languish    who spread nets on the water. The workers in combed flax will be in despair,    and the weavers of white cotton.10 Those who are the pillars of the land will be crushed,    and all who work for pay will be grieved.

11 The princes of Zoan are utterly foolish;    the wisest counselors of Pharaoh give stupid counsel. How can you say to Pharaoh,    “I am a son of the wise,    a son of ancient kings”?12 Where then are your wise men?    Let them tell you    that they might know what the Lord of hosts has purposed against Egypt.13 The princes of Zoan have become fools,    and the princes of Memphis are deluded;those who are the cornerstones of her tribes    have made Egypt stagger.14 The Lord has mingled within her a spirit of confusion, and they will make Egypt stagger in all its deeds,    as a drunken man staggers in his vomit.15 And there will be nothing for Egypt    that head or tail, palm branch or reed, may do.

Egypt, Assyria, Israel Blessed

16 In that day the Egyptians will be like women, and tremble with fear before the hand that the Lord of hosts shakes over them. 17 And the land of Judah will become a terror to the Egyptians. Everyone to whom it is mentioned will fear because of the purpose that the Lord of hosts has purposed against them.

18 In that day there will be five cities in the land of Egypt that speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance to the Lord of hosts. One of these will be called the City of Destruction.

19 In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the Lord at its border. 20 It will be a sign and a witness to the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt. When they cry to the Lord because of oppressors, he will send them a savior and defender, and deliver them. 21 And the Lord will make himself known to the Egyptians, and the Egyptians will know the Lord in that day and worship with sacrifice and offering, and they will make vows to the Lord and perform them. 22 And the Lord will strike Egypt, striking and healing, and they will return to the Lord, and he will listen to their pleas for mercy and heal them.

23 In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and Assyria will come into Egypt, and Egypt into Assyria, and the Egyptians will worship with the Assyrians.

24 In that day Israel will be the third with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth, 25 whom the Lord of hosts has blessed, saying, “Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel my inheritance.”

The Lord Will Punish Israel

Rejoice not, O Israel!    Exult not like the peoples;for you have played the whore, forsaking your God.    You have loved a prostitute's wages    on all threshing floors.Threshing floor and wine vat shall not feed them,    and the new wine shall fail them. They shall not remain in the land of the Lord,    but Ephraim shall return to Egypt,    and they shall eat unclean food in Assyria.

They shall not pour drink offerings of wine to the Lord,    and their sacrifices shall not please him.It shall be like mourners' bread to them;    all who eat of it shall be defiled;for their bread shall be for their hunger only;    it shall not come to the house of the Lord.

What will you do on the day of the appointed festival,    and on the day of the feast of the Lord? For behold, they are going away from destruction;    but Egypt shall gather them;    Memphis shall bury them.Nettles shall possess their precious things of silver;    thorns shall be in their tents.

The days of punishment have come;    the days of recompense have come;    Israel shall know it.The prophet is a fool;    the man of the spirit is mad, because of your great iniquity    and great hatred. The prophet is the watchman of Ephraim with my God;yet a fowler's snare is on all his ways,    and hatred in the house of his God.They have deeply corrupted themselves    as in the days of Gibeah:he will remember their iniquity;    he will punish their sins.

10 Like grapes in the wilderness,    I found Israel.Like the first fruit on the fig tree    in its first season,    I saw your fathers. But they came to Baal-peor    and consecrated themselves to the thing of shame,    and became detestable like the thing they loved.11 Ephraim's glory shall fly away like a bird—    no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!12 Even if they bring up children,    I will bereave them till none is left.Woe to them    when I depart from them!13 Ephraim, as I have seen, was like a young palm planted in a meadow;    but Ephraim must lead his children out to slaughter.14 Give them, O Lord    what will you give?Give them a miscarrying womb    and dry breasts.

15 Every evil of theirs is in Gilgal;    there I began to hate them.Because of the wickedness of their deeds    I will drive them out of my house.I will love them no more;    all their princes are rebels.

16 Ephraim is stricken;    their root is dried up;    they shall bear no fruit.Even though they give birth,    I will put their beloved children to death.17 My God will reject them    because they have not listened to him;    they shall be wanderers among the nations.
