South Africa-focused Anglo American Platinum Ltd (Amplats) said headline earnings (HEPS) per share should be back in the black when it releases its 2013 financial results on February 3.
The world’s largest platinum producer estimated that HEPS would increase to a profit of US$4.80-US$5.90 for the year ended December 31, 2013, compared to a loss of US$5.62 for the previous year.
It said the increase in HEPS was primarily due to higher sales volumes and a favourable exchange rate, with the South African Rand falling 20% against the US dollar in 2013.
However, Amplats said this was partially offset by weaker US dollar metals prices and one-off restructuring costs amounting to R1.46 billion and a higher effective tax rate resulting from an additional provision for tax from previous years.
Amplats and its two main rivals Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd and Lonmin plc are currently bracing for an AMCU strike which is set to begin on Thursday January 23.
