Just as Rio Tinto's long-awaited final approval for the Simandou iron ore project in Guinea was granted, the company's flagship Australian iron ore division revealed that its export operations had encountered some hindrance during the three months ending June 30 due to the impact of a train derailment incident.

"With the final approval from the governments of Guinea and China, Rio Tinto has taken a solid step forward in the development process of the Simandou project."

The Simandou project consists of two adjacent iron ore projects with different ownership, which will share railway and port infrastructure to jointly deliver approximately 120 million tons of iron ore to the seaborne market.

Originally, the governments of Guinea and China planned to grant final approval by the end of 2023, but the actual process took much longer than expected. This also prompted Rio Tinto to provide several hundred million dollars of financial support to other participating parties while waiting for approval to secure its own funding.

Rio Tinto's cost contribution to the Simandou project is $6.2 billion, and it is expected that the mine will reach full production capacity in 2028 or 2029.

The railway disruption and wet weather earlier this year jointly contributed to Rio Tinto's export rate being lower than that of last year.
高盛（Goldman Sachs）预计，未来六个月铁矿石的平均价格将在每吨100美元至105美元之间。该矿商在过去六个月的发货量为1.583亿吨，与去年同期相比减少了约330万吨。
Goldman Sachs predicts that the average price of iron ore will be between 100and105 per tonne in the next six months. The mining company's shipment volume in the past six months was 158.3 million tonnes, which is approximately 3.3 million tonnes less compared to the same period last year.

However, currently, most analysts believe that the company will have difficulty reaching the export volume of 331.8 million tonnes achieved last year.

According to S&P Global’s Platts, on July 15th, the price of iron ore with 62% iron content was $108.75 per ton. Goldman Sachs believes that considering that around 80 million tons of global supply is not profitable at $90 per ton, the average price of iron ore in the next six months will be between $100 and $105 per ton. Analysts at Goldman Sachs stated in a report on July 2nd: “We believe this price is a solid support level.”

Meanwhile, J.P. Morgan predicts that the benchmark price of iron ore will average $110 per ton over the next six months, while the average price in 2025 will be $105 per ton.

Additionally, due to the expected persistence of high natural gas prices until the end of 2024, Rio Tinto has revised its annual production target for its Australian alumina division from a maximum of 7.9 million tonnes to a maximum of 7.3 million tonnes.
