During the Mining Investment Experience Exchange Conference held on December 21, 2014, Dr. Lyu Guo, Chairman of the Board of Suntrans, was interviewed by mining media outlets including China Mining News, Land and Resources News, and China Gold News. 语言服务在当今市场上占据着重要的位置，架起了中外沟通的桥梁。矿业翻译在诸多人眼中可能是一个不太熟悉的领域。殊不知，这个行业却在国家经济发展中扮演着举足轻重的角色。地质勘查、矿业咨询、矿产资源等分支在国际交流与合作中起着重要作用。那么，矿业翻译在市场当中又将引起怎样的轰动呢？中国矿业报记者近日邀请到了中国矿业翻译行业的领军者——北京阳光创译翻译有限公司总经理吕国博士，他与我们一起分享了矿业专业语言服务在助力中国矿企“走出去”过程中的深刻见解。
Language services play a crucial role in the current market, as they build a bridge for communication between China and foreign countries. Mining translation may seem an unfamiliar field to many people, but little do they know that this industry plays a pivotal role in the country’s economic development. Subfields such as geological exploration, mining consulting, and mineral resources play important roles in international exchange and cooperation. So, what kind of impact will mining translation have in the market? Recently, a reporter from China Mining News invited Dr. Lyu Guo, General Manager of Beijing Suntrans Co., Ltd.—a leader in China’s mining translation industry—to share his profound insights on how professional mining language services support Chinese mining enterprises in their “going global” efforts.
记者：中国企业走出海外进行矿业投资，第一步就是语言交流。要想保障交流的高效与畅通，专业化的语言翻译就像一根线，串联起中外矿业合作领域各环节上的每颗“珍珠”。请您谈谈专业化的语言服务在中外矿企合作中的重要性。
Reporter: For Chinese enterprises investing in overseas mining projects, language communication is the first step. To ensure efficient and smooth communication, professional language translation is like a thread that links every “pearl” in all links of Sino-foreign mining cooperation. Could you talk about the importance of professional language services in the cooperation between Chinese and foreign mining enterprises?
吕国：市场上很多人都认为做翻译只要懂英语就可以应付各种场合，实际上地质矿业是一个专业性非常强的行业，涉及很多专业术语知识。比如在进行海外矿业项目合作时，翻译人员如果只懂得公共英语，缺少专业的地质背景知识，例如将“孔雀石”（malachite）译成peacock rock（“孔雀”加“石头”），将“长石”（plagioclase）译成long stone（“长的石头”），就会造成国际笑话。再比如，Devonian这个单词翻译成中文，既可译成“泥盆纪”，又可译成“泥盆系”。泥盆纪是指地质年代的分类 阶元，泥盆系是地层的分类阶元，但在运用时究竟是指地层还是年代？缺少地质背景知识的翻译人员是很难分辨清楚的。再比如，prospecting和 exploration都指的是“勘探”的意思，但是prospecting泛指找矿、寻宝，而exploration开展的地质工作则更加专业、具体，甚至有详实的计划。
Dr. Lyu Guo: Many people in the market believe that knowing English is enough to handle translation in all scenarios. However, geological mining is a highly professional industry involving extensive professional terminology. For example, during cooperation on overseas mining projects, if a translator only knows general English but lacks professional geological background—for instance, translating “malachite” (孔雀石) as “peacock rock” (a literal combination of “peacock” and “rock”), or “plagioclase” (长石) as “long stone” (a literal combination of “long” and “stone”)—it would lead to international embarrassments. Another example: the English word “Devonian” can be translated into Chinese as either “泥盆纪” (Devonian Period) or “泥盆系” (Devonian System). The Devonian Period is a taxonomic unit of geological time, while the Devonian System is a stratigraphic unit of stratigraphy. But when using the term, how to distinguish whether it refers to stratigraphy or time? Translators without geological background find it difficult to tell. Yet another example: both “prospecting” and “exploration” are translated as “勘探” in Chinese, but “prospecting” generally refers to refers to mineral exploration (including preliminary search for mineral deposits), while “exploration” involves more professional and specific geological work, even with detailed plans.
在绝大多数情况下，矿业翻译既要有扎实的英语知识背景，又需具备丰富而专业的地质知识背景。世界上矿产资源分布不均匀，储量、品位、矿种等自然禀赋差异和国家语言的差别都很大。例如，刚果以前是法国的殖民地，现在通用语言是以法语为主，英语为辅，刚果所有的地质资料也是以法语和部分英语为主。墨西哥以西班牙语为主，在和墨西哥的矿业公司进行谈判时，所聘用的人才要同时具备西班牙语和地质专业两种技能。这种人才很稀缺，却很关键，同时又不是长期需要，需求期限依项目周期而定，短则几周，长则数月。在这种情况下，选择专业的矿业翻译公司就比较适合。
In most cases, mining translators must have both a solid English foundation and rich, professional geological knowledge. Mineral resources are unevenly distributed worldwide, with significant differences in natural endowments such as reserves, grades, and mineral types, as well as in national languages. For example, the Congo (a former French colony) now uses French as its primary language and English as a secondary one, and all its geological data are mainly in French and partially in English. Spanish is the primary language in Mexico; when negotiating with Mexican mining companies, the talents employed must possess both Spanish proficiency and geological expertise. Such talents are scarce yet critical, and their services are not required long-term—their deployment depends on the project cycle, ranging from a few weeks to several months. In such cases, choosing a professional mining translation company is more appropriate.
记者：从矿产资源的地区分布不平衡以及目前的矿业形势来看，中国矿业企业“走出去、引进来”已是大势所趋。阳光创译恰好起到了桥梁作用。那么，在什么样的情况下需要选择专业的矿业翻译公司呢？
Reporter: Given the uneven regional distribution of mineral resources and the current mining situation, it has become an irresistible trend for Chinese mining enterprises to “go global and bring in foreign resources”. Suntrans just acts as a bridge in this process. So, under what circumstances should enterprises choose a professional mining translation company?
吕国：我们公司每年都会带领一些中国企业家到加拿大多伦多参加国际矿业盛会PDAC。在会议上，我们帮助国土资源部做宣传和接待工作。这时我们承担的责任非常重大，不仅表现为翻译工作，更多地表现为我们承担的工作关系着国际间的交流与合作。所以说，专业的语言服务是非常重要的。
Dr. Lyu Guo: Every year, our company leads a group of Chinese entrepreneurs to attend the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) Convention—a major international mining event—in Toronto, Canada. At the convention, we assist the Ministry of Natural Resources in promotion and reception work. Our responsibility here is enormous: it goes beyond translation, as our work is related to international exchange and cooperation. This is why professional language services are so important.
在面临中外双方重要的谈判场合时，短时间内要用外语将谈判内容口头准确地表达出来，且保证专业术语准确，这时就需要专业矿业翻译人士的出场。虽然某些大型的地质矿业勘查公司、矿业投资公司和投资银行内部也有高端的翻译人士，但一旦面临巨量的翻译资料时，就难以在短期内召集到大批量的专业翻译人才。当然，某些矿业投资公司可能具备地质人才，并能翻译地质资料，甚至组建了翻译团队，但是往往又缺少小语种的翻译人员。因此，在面临只懂地质和英语，但是缺乏熟悉小语种的复合型专业人才的情况下，中国矿业企业就需要专业性较强的矿业翻译公司来为其提供相关服务。
In important Sino-foreign negotiation scenarios, there is an urgent need for professional mining translators who can accurately convey negotiation content orally in a foreign language within a short time while ensuring the accuracy of professional terminology. Although some large geological and mining exploration companies, mining investment firms, and investment banks have in-house high-end translators, they struggle to assemble a large team of professional translators in a short time when faced with massive volumes of translation materials. Of course, some mining investment companies may have geological talents who can translate geological materials and even have established translation teams, but they often lack translators proficient in minor languages. Therefore, when Chinese mining enterprises only have talents who understand geology and English but lack interdisciplinary professionals proficient in minor languages, they need to turn to highly professional mining translation companies for relevant services.
举例来说，在非洲乌干达基伦贝铜矿项目的收购场合，谈判人员要懂英语，有地质背景，具备国际商务经验，还要了解相关国家的文化习俗。在这种情况下，就需要多种经验技能综合于一体的翻译人员。在涉及到谈判对方是高层部长级甚至总统级的国外官员时，如果自身没有高度综合素质、多方面综合技能的人参与翻译的话，谈判交流与沟通也许会出现偏差。所以，专业的翻译公司是非常重要的。我们曾经接到中国地质调查局的翻译任务，对方要求在10天内翻译出几百万字的矿业资料，并且最后要排版成册。这样的翻译项目都需要受过良好训练的专业化团队，按照一定的程序，从语法的正确性到专业地质术语的准确性，再到排版的有序性，最后才能达到质量合格的标准。我们曾多次陪同我国大型矿企去国外矿山参观考察，这就要求翻译人员要具备相关的地质专业知识及野外经验。再如，一旦涉及到像哈萨克斯坦这样以俄语为主的国家，如果翻译人员不懂小语种，又缺乏野外经验，就会出现意想不到的错误。
Take the acquisition of the Kilembe Copper Mine Project in Uganda, Africa, for example: negotiators must know English, have a geological background, possess international business experience, and understand the cultural customs of the relevant country. In such cases, translators with a combination of multiple skills and experience are required. When negotiating with foreign officials at the ministerial or even presidential level, if the translators involved lack high comprehensive quality and multi-faceted skills, deviations may occur in communication. This is why professional translation companies are essential. We once received a translation task from the China Geological Survey, which required us to translate millions of words of mining materials, format them, and compile them into bound volumes within 10 days. Such translation projects require a well-trained professional team to follow a set process—ensuring grammatical correctness, accuracy of professional geological terminology, and orderly formatting—before meeting the quality standards. We have accompanied many large Chinese mining enterprises on overseas mine visits and inspections on multiple occasions; this requires translators to have relevant geological expertise and field experience. Another example: when dealing with countries like Kazakhstan, where Russian is the main language, translators who do not understand minor languages or lack field experience will make unexpected mistakes.
记者：阳光创译的发展历程以及您个人的发展在不同时期的某些阶段都作了相应调整，最后走上了职业翻译的道路，如今在这个领域有了很高的知名度。请您介绍一下阳光创译目前的服务对象以及服务内容。
Reporter: Both the development of Suntrans and your personal career have undergone adjustments at different stages, and finally, you embarked on the path of professional translation. Now you have gained high recognition in this field. Could you introduce Suntrans’s current clients and service scope?
吕国：上大学的时候，我依靠自身很好的外语水平教了外语课程。后来，我考上了中国地质大学的研究生。再后来，我偶然得到了一次做翻译的机会，但对方要求我既要懂矿物学、岩石学、矿藏学这些专业知识，又要有非常流利的外语。可即便这样严格的要求，我都能够胜任，那是因为我在攻读硕士期间学习了这些专业知识。所以说很多时候，选择非常重要，尤其是在社会的薄弱环节上，如果选择了别人做不了或不愿做的交叉领域，也许你就能找到好的立足点。我们阳光创译致力于帮助中国矿业公司、地矿单位、矿业投资公司、投资银行等企事业单位走出国门，同时也为海外矿业公司及投融资公司进入中国市场提供包括笔译和口译的专业矿业翻译服务。公司现拥有专业翻译人员600余名，核心译审人员60余名，已为国内外政府部门和组织，以及中国国际矿业大会、中国-东盟矿业大会等重要会议提供了大量优质的翻译服务。阳光创译语言服务的领域中，63%涉及地质矿业领域，其次是石油、法律、机械、工程、金融等领域，已累计完成各领域翻译字数超过1.7亿字，口译服务超过1.5万小时，服务语言70余种，积累专业词汇上百万。实力来源于不断的积累，我们阳光创译建立了专业地质矿业行业术语库，保证了翻译术语的高度统一性。
Dr. Lyu Guo: When I was in college, I taught foreign language courses thanks to my strong foreign language skills. Later, I was admitted to China University of Geosciences for postgraduate studies. After that, I accidentally got an opportunity to work as a translator, but the client required me to have both professional knowledge in mineralogy, petrology, and mineral deposit science, as well as fluent foreign language skills. I was able to meet these strict requirements because I had studied these professional subjects during my master’s program. So, choices are often crucial—especially in areas where the society has gaps. If you choose an interdisciplinary field that others cannot or are unwilling to engage in, you may find a solid foothold. Suntrans is committed to helping Chinese mining companies, geological and mining institutions, mining investment firms, investment banks, and other enterprises and institutions “go global”. At the same time, we provide professional mining translation services (including written translation and interpretation) for overseas mining companies and investment and financing institutions to enter the Chinese market. Currently, the company has more than 600 professional translators and over 60 core translation reviewers, and has provided high-quality translation services to government departments and organizations at home and abroad, as well as to important conferences such as the China International Mining Congress and the China-ASEAN Mining Congress. Among Suntrans’s language services, 63% are in the geological and mining field, followed by fields such as petroleum, law, machinery, engineering, and finance. To date, we have completed over 170 million words of translated content across various fields, provided more than 15,000 hours of interpretation services, covered over 70 languages, and accumulated millions of professional terms. Strength comes from continuous accumulation—Suntrans has established a professional geological and mining terminology database to ensure a high degree of consistency in translated terms.

Dr. Lyu Guo: Suntrans is committed to building China’s top brand in geological and mining translation, focusing on providing language support for Chinese enterprises to “go global and bring in foreign resources”. Since its establishment in 2008, the company has continued to grow and develop. 记者：您认为目前低迷的矿业形势对行业内的翻译公司是造成了消极影响，还是会提供更多机遇？
Reporter: In your opinion, has the current sluggish mining market had a negative impact on translation companies in the industry, or will it bring more opportunities?
吕国：应该说是受到了一定程度的消极影响，但我们面临的机遇依然非常多。矿业市场冷的时期，勘查公司投入会减少，但是与矿业相关的并购、收购活动在局部上会变得相对活跃，相应的语言服务需求也会变得比较旺盛。阳光创译正在努力建立矿业行业数据库。从现有的数据看，行业形势将继续下行，但是相信随着非洲、东南亚等新兴经济体的不断壮大，矿业市场的发展空间依然会不断扩大。在这个过程中，地质矿业翻译机构就是要把这种地区间的不平衡，包括信息不平衡、资源不平衡等因素综合考虑到一起，为各方搭建平台，创造出更多的发展机会，从而推动行业发展。
Dr. Lyu Guo: It is fair to say that we have been affected by some negative impacts, but we still face numerous opportunities. During a downturn in the mining market, exploration companies will reduce their investment, but mining-related mergers and acquisitions will become relatively active in some regions, leading to strong demand for corresponding language services. Suntrans is working to establish a mining industry database. According to existing data, the industry will continue to face a downward trend, but we believe that with the continuous development of emerging economies in Africa, Southeast Asia, and other regions, the development space of the mining market will continue to expand. In this process, geological and mining translation institutions need to comprehensively consider factors such as regional imbalances (including information asymmetry and resource imbalance) to build platforms for all parties, create more development opportunities, and thus promote the development of the industry.
