From June 23 to 26, 2025, the 36th Sunny Side of the Doc, held in La Rochelle, France, took place as scheduled. As an annual grand gathering in the global documentary industry, this year's event attracted over 2,100 professionals from more than 60 countries and regions, representing over 1,000 institutions. Yi Mingzhu, partner and producer of REAL IMAGE MEDIA, attended as a representative, showcasing two original documentary projects. She held one-on-one discussions with several institutions from the UK, Portugal, France, Canada, and other countries, laying the groundwork for future international cooperation.
"China Hours": International Buyers Focus on Chinese Projects
On the noon of June 24, the "China Pavilion" hosted its annual signature event "China Hour". The event, divided into two main segments: project pitching and institutional promotion, drew numerous decision-makers from international media outlets. Over the years, "China Hour" has become a core window for global buyers to gain insights into the latest trends and cooperation needs of Chinese documentaries.
REAL IMAGE MEDIA's Documentary Project Seed on the Border Selected for Pitching Session
REAL IMAGE MEDIA's documentary project Seed on the Border was selected for the pitching session. The film focuses on an orphanage called "Leadership Home" in the mountainous area of northern Thailand, which houses children who have fled in Myanmar or suffer from extreme poverty. The orphanage teaches them farming, management, and leadership skills, enabling the children to become "young leaders" who can change their own and their community's fate. Pramote, the director of the orphanage, has a simple yet profound definition of a "leader": "A leader has a strong heart and passes love and knowledge to those around them in need. This help doesn't have to be money; it can be ideas, energy, and everything one has." The project's humanistic care and international perspective have garnered widespread attention.
"China Night": Premiere of China's First Animated Documentary Film on Wing Chun
In the evening, the "China Night" achievement sharing session was held at the La Rochelle Maritime Museum, with over 100 Chinese and foreign guests in attendance. REAL IMAGE MEDIA and France's REAL WORKS jointly announced the animated documentary film project Wing Chun. Developed by a team led by Qiu Jiaqiu, founder of REAL IMAGE MEDIA, and a team led by Gao Weihua (professor at Communication University of China and producer of the animated film Jiang Ziya), the film has completed preliminary shooting in China and several European countries. It aims to be China's first animated documentary film centered on Wing Chun. Multiple platforms and production companies from Europe and Canada have already expressed their intention to cooperate.
Project Follow-up: Reunion in Paris for Joint Development
One week after the Sunny Side of the Doc, Master Meng Qingfeng (Benny Meng) — an 8th-degree certified master of the International Wushu Federation and national Wing Chun council member of USAWKF, who is set to be the North American for Wing Chun — was invited to teach in Paris. From his Wing Chun studio in San Francisco to founding the world's first Wing Chun museum in the United States, he has demonstrated how the open and inclusive culture of Chinese martial arts has taken on new life in the West, while continuously exploring systems for young people to practice Wing Chun and cross-cultural exchanges. During this time, Yi Mingzhu (partner of REAL IMAGE MEDIA), Nicolas Deschamps (founder of REAL WORKS), Dr. Jamshid Zolghadriha (President of the French Shaolin Wing Chun Association), and Master Meng gathered in France. They discussed the current progress of the Wing Chun project, the work plan for the next phase, and international strategies, with a beautiful sunset captured in front of the Grande Arche de la Défense in Paris.
