Glamor of Lacquer Painting: Art Exhibition

Qiao Shiguang, born in Guantao, Hebei Province, in 1937, is now a professor in the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University. In more than 50 years of creation of modern Chinese lacquer painting, he has been dedicated to the study of applying traditional lacquering skill to painting, and created a set of artistic languages based on traditional Chinese lacquering technique and incorporating modern painting elements. Through this, he developed his unique artistic style featuring practical decoration, and opened up new space for the development of modern Chinese painting and lacquer art. For his great artistic achievements, he is widely acclaimed as a trendsetter of modern Chinese lacquer painting art.
Aiming to present the beauty of lacquer painting and promote its spirit, Qiao Shiguang, persistently and whole-heartedly devoted to the art, has created a wealth of works represented by A Fertile Land, The Water Festival, The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Impression about Garze Temple, all of which being regarded as masterpieces of modern Chinese lacquer painting. Led by him, the Chinese lacquer artists have completed the process of inventing the brand new lacquer painting art from zero and developing it from concept to fruitful results, with only one generation’s efforts.
The exhibition shows about 200 representative works created by Qiao in different periods, covering lacquer painting, ink-wash painting, sketches and calligraphy, and fully displaying his artistic achievements.
