CRCC Asia Participants Taught Environmental lesson to Migrant school students

March’s Community Outreach saw a group of CRCC Asia participants visit a Migrant School in the Beijing western district of Tongzhou. There they delivered an environmental themed class aimed at raising the students awareness on recycled material and engaging with the environment outside.

The school helps disadvantaged migrant children gain an education not afforded to them by the state because of their rural resident status. The students we were teaching also had a hearing disorder that meant the schoolteachers used sign language to aid the communication.

The class focused on the environment, as it is such a key issue in China’s capital. After some fun icebreaker activities, we gave each student a bucket to collect items found outside. With the items collected, the students were asked to make a picture. The students all produced impressive pieces of artwork showcasing their creative skills and use of the outdoor environment. In the rest of the class, we then instructed them how to make a birdhouse from the recycled material we had provided, some of the students again showed true initiative to construct houses from the material provided.

Following the class, the students had been able to engage with the environment outside and had learnt how they could reuse recycled material to create items that can help support wildlife. The class also allowed the CRCC Asia participants to immerse themselves in China’s vibrant culture whilst providing vital skills and classroom attention to the children.

As well as providing a lesson to engage with the students, CRCC Asia and the participants were happy to contribute to providing 2 weeks of education sponsorship for one of the students.
