Trip to YeYaHu Wetlands National Park with Terry Townsend
Come join us on Sunday 2nd April to explore YeYaHu (野鸭湖) Wetland National Park, home to Beijing’s only nature reserve wetland birds and one of the most important habitats both in Beijing and Northern China.
Often overlooked and undervalued, wetlands in the past have been drained to be used by developers. Times have since changed and wetlands can be considered to be one of the most productive ecosystems in the world.
Wetlands are comparable to rainforest inthe amount of species they can support. The abundant vegetation and shallow water levels in wetlands play host to many plant and animal species. Many species of birds rely on wetlands for breeding or nesting grounds, including ducks, geese, woodpeckers, hawks and wading birds.
For this trip we will be joined by Terry Townshend. Terry is a passionate conservationist. He has spearheaded efforts to save some of China’s most endangered birds, in particular the Jankowski’s Bunting, a poorly known bird living in remote northeast China with a known population of under 100 pairs. In 2012 he became a Species Champion with BirdLife International. You can follow his informative blog at https://birdingbeijing.com/about/.
All profits will go to support the Roots and Shoots Volunteering Group.
This event is open to children and families.
Arrangement
Bus will depart from Exit B of HuiXinXiJie Nan Kou (惠新西街南口) Subway Line 5/10 at 6:00am. Alternatively we can collect from Exit B2 of BeiShaTan (北沙滩) on Line15 at 6:30am. Return time: approximately 7:00 pm.
In the park there are a series of trails and viewing platforms. Once inside we should walk around the main lake and visit the main observation tower. We'll probably walk for around 4-5 hours in total, stopping frequently to look at what we find. It's usually around 10 degrees C colder at Yeyahu than the city given the higher altitude (500m above sea level versus 50m in Beijing), so please bring warm clothes, gloves and hat etc. There is no place to buy lunch so ideally we bring sandwiches or snacks to take with us. Water/soda/pot noodles etc. can be bought inside the park. Terry will keep a note of everything we see and hear and will send a list afterwards with bird names in English and Chinese.
