Time: 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, July 16-17

We highly recommend you to come on both days, complete the whole session with the local students and celebrate their progress. But you can also choose to attend a whole day session.

Venue: Near Chaoyangmen Subway Station(Detailed address will be sent to those who registered)

Cost: 50 RMB per person to share the cost of the venue.

 


You will work closely with local high school students to complete group tasks and help them practice English expressions that deal with a variety of challenging situations specifically concerning group collaboration. You will participate in theater games to buildacute awareness of different non-verbal cues across culture. You will also jointhe rehearsing of a Forum Theater called “The Sound of Silencing” which depicteda series of oppressive situations encountered by two international students ina small group discussion in college. These problems remain unsolved in theplay.

 

In the Forum Theater, after the plays are performed once without interruption, the audience have an opportunity todiscuss the issues and oppressions they observed, and think about what theymight do differently if they could change the scene to a more socially just outcome. In the second run, the workshop participants had the opportunity to yell “STOP” when they observed instances of oppression and joined the playerson the stage to alter the outcome of the play. Both the local high schoolersand you will get a chance to embrace the second (and third, and fourth) chancesthe interactive theater process provides, and to practice strategies tointerrupt oppression.

 

This is not-for-profit event and is lookingfor maximum 10 participants with fluent English to join the high schoolstudents. It will be facilitated by Jun Chen, who is the Program Manager of InternationalTeenage Competition and Communication Center and has rich experienceworking with local students. Before she started working in Beijing, she gaineda Master’s Degree in Cultural Studies at the University of Washington with anemphasize on empowering International students using innovative andperformance-based pedagogies.
