It's hard to believe Farm to Neighbors farmers' market is already one year old! I feel like I knew so little when I first started it, and I'm just starting to learn something. Maturity takes a long time, just like how a plant would grow in it's natural state.
One of my "sweet burdens" while organizing the market was designing the posters every week. Since I don't know how to use pro software, countless hours were spent staring at Photoshop with a desire to make a new poster each week that converys the freshness of our market. Now, looking back, we've got a lot of poster that can pretty much tell a store of our year! So let's review:

Our first event was at Wujin, the space was packed full with vegetables. When I showed the poster to vegetable lady, Mrs. Wu, her response made a strong impression on me. She said she was not "organic" even though she follows strict organic practice and don't even use the substances that have been approved by organic standards, since she doesn't have organic certification, she could only be considered as "ecological". Although I didn't quite understand why she insisted that way, her honest and transparent attitude really touched me.

It wasn't hard to see the Gulou community was lacking a place to buy safe and chemical-free vegetables after our first event. A friend who was sourcing high-quality ingredients introduced me to Mumu's farm, run by a graduate from Agriculture University who was raising chickens under peach trees that don't use any pesticides and chemical fertilizers. So I bought some from her and invite Mrs. Wu to come sell vegetables again. Modernista Old Cafe & Tapas Bar was run by a good friend who was nice enough to host our market.

In August, we started working with Modernista to use seasonal fresh vegetables from the market to make a special Sunday brunch + cocktail menu. Not only could you buy vegetables but also eat brunch, why not?

Having only veggies and peaches was obviously not enough. By the end of August, we had free-range pork and pasture-raised eggs from Yuangu Valley Farm. Zimin's Tibetan Yogurt (now called "Tsuowa") and seasonal local organically-grown grapes also joined. Now, we really got a market goin'!

Then, Beijing's best artisanal French cheese maker, Le Fromager de Pekin joined us as well!

Come September, we had handmade rice wine and sweet fermented rice from Alian-mama (now called Tang Sir), none additives added!

You can see that, at this point, I was still pretty ignorant about the idea of "organic" in China, so still having the word "organic" associated to my market in the Chinese description.

After visiting a few more farms around Beijing, it was enough for me to realize that being "organic" in China is not that simple, and often involves corrupted practices. This renders the word "organic" in China almost meaningless, or even sometimes a dirty word. So with the same honest attitude I learned from Mrs. Wu, I stopped using the broad label "organic" for my market, but rather focusing on conveying "exactly what we are and do". Meanwhile, I started sell seasonal apples and apple chips grown by Xie Ming from Shnagdong, Xixia.

As Thanksgiving rolls around, we invited artisanal food makers in Beijing like Kitchen Collective to sell their ham, Rager Pie to sell their pies, and Bonne Nani Jams to sell jams and chutneys as a way to celebrate Thanksgiving on the market.

Then, Modernista enters into construction mode for their grand expansion! We get prepared to move somewhere else to host the market.
Culture Yard!
We hosted two very festive Christmas Markets at Culture Yard in Beixingqiao. Big shout-out to @Culture Yard!!!

In Janurary, we came to the hipster Hunnan restaurant, Nice Rice, in Dongsishitiao. Using a favorite quote of the restaurant owner by Virginia Woolf, "One cannot think well, love well sleep well, if one has not dined well." Big shout-out to @Nice Rice!!

Then, we came to celebrity chef Jun's 4Corners restaurant (you can find Jun's show Kitchen Quest on Travel Channel). All of our market customers couldn't stop raving about Jun's take on Western-inspired Vietnamnese food. It was often a full-house during lunch hours. Big shout-out to @4Corners!
FEB - 2月 - 2015

Even though I didn't design this poster, but we still did a market at Jinbao Place!

At Sunhe, we utilitzed the big grass lawn in front of Pinotage to make a BBQ Picnic party. Pinotage's South-African style big skewers made a hit that day. Big shout-out to @Pinotage!

In April, we had the fortune to have Mrs. Zhang Yinghui to come share with us on the topic of "What We Talk About When We Talk About Organic".
MAY - 5月 - 2015

After waiting for Modernista for almost 5 months, Sundays in May we finally got to return to a bigger, more beautiful and even more magically old-world-like Modernista!

Saturday second stop: Pinnacle Plaza! But unfortunately we got totally rained out! Boooo :(

Third stop on Saturday, we were invited by Plan B to join their annual Black Party celebration at Pingo.

Forth stop on Satuday, we went to CHARCOAL restaurant in Shunyi to bring about a pig-picking BBQ farmers' market.

From June on, Farm to Neighbors has a new logo and a very talented designer to do our posters. Work that she can design and finish beautifully within one or two hours no longer needs a dummy like me to mull over for days! This frees up more time for me to focus on selecting vendors, visiting farms and finding better venues (which always is a big issue in BJ)! Thank you Veeeky!!!

We organized three farmers' market at Le Kindergarten in Lido. Each time with a different theme, from making Zongzi to doing plant-based tie-dye. Both kids and parents had a blast, and not to mention there was so much good food! Big shout-out to Le Kindergarten!

JUL - 7月 - 2015
