This week at Sunday Jazz series, we are thrilled to present internationally aclaimed young Chinese guitar player Zhang Xiongguan. 

Zhang is coming all the way from Shanghai to introduce Beijing audiences with his new original compositions, published earlier this year in a debut album, "New Sound From The Past".

For the occasion, he will be acompanied by primising young drummer Xu Zhitong and Zhangke on double bass.

Zhang Xiongguan is one of the most promising young jazz guitarist and composer in China. Influenced by jazz giants like Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Peter Bernstein, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Red Garland, Fred Hersch, he has revealed his talent both in standard repertoire and contemporary jazz idiom. 

After graduating from Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2013, Xiongguan went on to pursue his Master of Music degree in Jazz Performance in New England Conservatory in Boston, where he studied with some of the leading figures in the jazz world: Jerry Bergonzi, Miguel Zenon, Fred Hersch, Jason Moran, Brad Shepik, Joe Morris, Ken Schaphorst, and John McNeil. He got selected in his first year as the guitar player in the New England Conservatory Jazz Orchestra and played four concerts in the famous Jordan Hall in Boston, and was awarded the NEC Merit Award, the NEC Scholarship and the Tan Family Education Grant. 

Xiongguan shared the stage with famous jazz artists such as Donny McCaslin, Chris Potter, Nils Landgren, Eric Marienthal, Eric Alexander and participated in jazz festivals in Shanghai, Taiwan, Germany and America. He has performed in famous venues around the world such as Birdland Hamburg, Lilypad, Wally's Club JZ Club, JZ Latino and Lavida Club. In July 2015, Xiongguan was selected as one of the ten finalists for the Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition and received acclaim for his playing from the head of the jury Kurt Rosenwinkel.

Xiongguan Zhang’s debut album “New Sound From The Past” was released on Jan.9^th , 2016 and received acclaim from musicians and fans around the world. Renowned Saxophonist and educator Jerry Bergonzi praised Xiongguan’s playing and writing as “superb and innovative”.

张雄关是中国最出色的青年爵士音乐家之一。自从18岁接触爵士乐后，他的演奏便深受Wes Montgomery,Jim Hall,Peter Bernstein,Miles Davis,Sonny Rollins,Ornette Coleman,Herbie Hancock,Red Garland,Fred Hersch等爵士乐名家所影响。张雄关在细心研习传统爵士乐作品的同时，也展现出对现代爵士乐作品的演奏和创作能力。

   张雄关于2009年考入上海音乐学院，师从廖季文副教授。在校期间成绩优秀，连续三年获得人民奖学金二等奖。担任上海音乐学院大乐队吉他手并随乐团参加了2012年德国石荷州音乐节，2010年台中爵士音乐节，2010，2011，2012年上海爵士音乐节，并作为组委会委员筹划并参加了2012年中国（上海）第一届和2014年中国（上海）第二届现代爵士教学研讨会。

    2013年毕业于上海音乐学院后，张雄关前往美国深造，在世界最知名的音乐学府之一:波士顿新英格兰音乐学院(New England Conservatory)攻读硕士学位，学习爵士吉他演奏与爵士作曲编曲，他师从爵士乐大师Jerry Bergonzi,Miguel Zenon,Fred Hersch,Jason Moran,Brad Shepik,Joe Morris,Ken Schaphorst,John McNeil 等。在NEC的第一年他便入选了NEC爵士大乐队(NEC Jazz Orchestra)，同乐团在著名的音乐厅Jordan Hall举行了四场音乐会。张雄关在美国学习期间多次入选NEC Dean's List(学校用来表彰在所有科目都取得A的同学)并获得NEC Merit Award,NEC Scholarship和Tan Family Education Grand。

   在2014年中国（上海）第二届现代爵士研讨会的闭幕音乐会上，上海音乐学院爵士大乐队和著名爵士乐大师Eric Alexander,Nils Landgren共同演奏了张雄关的爵士大乐队原创曲目"Unexpected Encounter"。他的原创作品还受到过Dave Holland,Miguel Zenon,Fred Hersch,Ken Schaphorst的一致好评。

   2015年7月，他做为全世界10位吉他手之一受邀参加了瑞士的蒙特勒爵士吉他大赛，他的演奏受到了评委会主席Kurt Rosenwinkel的高度肯定。张雄关还曾受过爵士乐名家Peter Bernstein,Mike Moreno,Jack Wilkins,Hal Crook,John Stowell,Matt Wilson,Dave Peck,Richard Sussman,Gene Aitken的指点。他曾与爵士乐大师Chris Potter,Nils Landgren,Donny McCaslin,Eric Marienthal等同台演出,他的演奏得到了大师们的一致好评。张雄关也活跃在世界各地的爵士乐舞台上，曾在Lilypad,Wally's Jazz Cafe,JZ Club,JZ Latino,Lavida Club,Hamburg Birdland等爵士酒吧演出。

    2015年归国后，张雄关继续活跃在国内的爵士乐圈。他的首张个人原创专辑《来自旧时的新声音》于2016年1月正式发行，发行以来受到了一致好评。爵士萨克斯大师Jerry Bergonzi称赞这张专辑有着:“顶级的演奏和作曲水平”。张雄关现任教于上海音乐学院，教授爵士乐和声，理论，历史，即兴以及吉他和乐队演奏。
