MORE ABOUT

THE PERFORMERS

Zoe WANG (accordion): Zoe Wang Torrese is a Chinese professional accordion player based in Beijing since 2004. She started learning accordion at the age of 4 and achieved her classical training at The Tianjin Music Institute. Then she went to France for several months in 2007 to follow a long master class with Frederic Deschamps, a famous French accordion player. She learnt with him the different aspects of French musette, Tango, and Swing. Back in China, from 2007 to 2011 she was the lead accordionist in The No Name Trio, specialized in Gypsy Jazz, Swing, and French Musette. The No Name Trio has performed more than 500 concerts over China, HK, Vietnam and France. In 2010, Zoe went back to France to improve her jazz and improvisation skills with Ludovic Beier, a true master of jazz accordion. Since 2009 she also is the lead accordionist with the Irish Music Band Blackwater. She is daily in contact with music thanks to her music and accordion teaching with very young children. Zoe, Alberto Volpe and Nico Torrese know each other for more than ten years. They played together a repertoire of Italian songs in 2013 in Beijing.

Doug MARTIN (mandolin): American guitarist, Doug Martin, started studying music at age 12. He is of half Italian descent on his mother's side and half Irish and French descent on his father's side. Though more known for playing jazz guitar, Doug also plays mandolin. His mandolin repertoire mainly consists of Italian folk music, various classical selections as well as a few latin pieces. Doug loves the music of Rafaelle Calace in particular as well as mazurkas from Italy's Southern mandolin tradition. In 2012 Doug had the pleasure to play with the San Francisco Mandolin Orchestra during their Spring season concert series. Currently Martin resides in Beijing, China full time performing on guitar and mandolin on a weekly basis.

Nico TORRESE (guitar): Based in Beijing since 2004, Nico TORRESE is a French professional guitar player. Classic music trained in the Conservatoire de Marseille, he’s been member of several bands in France and China since 1996. This is how he learnt his versatility, playing music genres as folk, blues, jazz, swing, traditional and rock. Along with his wife Zoe Torrese, he’s been afounder and member of The No Name Trio from 2007 to 2011, in which he was both rhythm and lead guitar player. Since 2009 he founded the Irish music band Blackwater, where he first played mandolin and tenor banjo, before switching to rhythm guitar in 2011. He is the lead guitar of The Beijing Beatles since 2014. Half Italian on his father side, Nico TORRESE met Paolo VOLPE in Beijing in 2006 and developed a true friendship which lead them to perform together a repertoire of Italian songs in 2013, along with Zoe Torrese.
