As Beijing scene welcomes American-born saxophonist Kevin Sun into its busy nightlife, our Sunday jazz sessions couldn't miss him either... This Sunday, together with Wang Dahuai on double bass and Fiach O'Brian on drums, the young Sun is surely up for a great jazz session at Modernista!

More about the band

Kevin Sun (b. 1991) is a saxophonist,improvisor-composer, and blogger. Currently based out of New York City, he performs most frequently with Great On Paper (GOP), a quartet with pianist Isaac Wilson, bassist Simón Willson, and drummer Robin Baytas, which finished its début album in February 2016 on Endectomorph Music. 

Winner of the 2013 Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition and 2012 Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition, Sun has performed internationally at venues in New York City (TheJazz Gallery, Smalls Jazz Club, ShapeShifter Lab), Beijing (East Shore), Paris (Sunside Jazz Club), Panama City (Danilo’s Jazz Club), and Kolkata, India. 

Sun is also an active contributor to Jazz Speaks, the official blog of The Jazz Gallery, a not-for-profit jazz cultural center in New York City. He served as the blog’seditor-in-chief from July 2013 to December 2014 and has conducted interviews with artists such as Herbie Hancock and Joshua Redman. Sun’s own blog on jazz and miscellanea, A Horizontal Search (www.thekevinsun.com) has received recognition from National Public Radio’s A Blog Supreme and Ethan Iverson’s Do the Math. 

Sun holds an M.M. in Jazz Performance from The New England Conservatory of Music and an A.B. from Harvard College, where he graduated summa cum laude. He is the first-ever jazz saxophone performance major to graduate from the five-year Harvard-NEC Dual Degree program, where he studied principally with Miguel Zenón. 

He served as a Teaching Assistant to Professor Vijay Iyer at Harvard University in the spring of 2016.

孙凯(Kevin Sun), 24 岁，萨克斯演奏者，音乐创作人，作家。 本科就读于哈佛大学文学专业，并以优异成绩在大学期间被新英格兰音乐学院爵士乐表演专业录取，成为首位五年制文学学士及音乐硕士双学位获得者。久居纽约，曾获VandorenEmerging Artist 和 Yamaha Young Performing Artists青年组大赛冠军，现为GreatOn Paper乐队一员，与钢琴Isaac Wilson, 贝斯SimónWillson, 鼓手Robin Baytas于2015年8月完成了东海岸的巡演，并计划于2016年初发布他们的首张专辑。孙凯多次在国际场馆演出，如纽约，北京，巴黎，巴拿马，加尔各答，印度。此外，孙凯还担任JazzSpeaks撰稿人。为纽约的一家公益爵士中心The Jazz Gallery官方网站供稿。他于2013-2014任该博客总编，先后采访了像HerbieHancock和Joshua Redman艺术巨匠。他本人也拥有独家博客和杂集（地址: www.thekevinsun.com)，他的作品 “A HorizontalSearch” 收获了来自国家公共电台 (National Public Radio) 和著名钢琴家EthanIverson的赞誉。
