Five amazing years have passed since Modernista shocked a then very quiet Baochao hutong for the first time with the sound of music and happy nights. This week, we want to remember so many dear friends and special times, celebrating with all of you yet another birthday!
Just to start with, we have put together a lot of fantastic events, and a special anniversary poster which is a visual collection of the past five years of Modernista's design.
We, of course, have our favorites. Check to see which ones meant something special for you as well, tell us why and we might have a copy for you somewhere in the back : )

If there is something that has been keeping with us from the beginning, that is Beijing's amazing flamenco scene. In these five years, we learned to love it far from home the way we never did when living there.
Put it with tapas and go palmas!
This is a performance like the ones you can see in the “tablaos” in Spain, where you are just in front of the “bailaores” (flamenco dancers) and you can feel the pasion of the flamenco show. Coming direct from Spain, the flamenco dancer Jazmin and the flamenco guitar Andrius will take you to rock the fiesta!

The Beijing Beatles recreate the mod sounds of the 60s, covering over 20 classics from the biggest and most famous British Pop Rock band in music history. Finally! Our anniversary night! We are FIVEEEEEEEE!!!!
It's been five years that passed fast, however seem like a whole life.
Today we recall all those amazing moments, friends, and things that happened to us all the way to this day since that cold and crazy first opening night.
Police shut us down that night, you remember? Just one hour after opening! And then we got it open again, of course. And until now, we still open.
We will be glad to see old and new friends coming to celebrate with us this special one, and of course our dear old friends from Mademoiselle et son Orquestre will bring us another memorable night!
They are the only group in China offering a unique repertoire of French songs. Their music is partly inspired by Gypsy Jazz. Using this swing style, Mademoiselle et son Orchestre re-inventsthe classic songs by Piaf, Brassens, Gainsbourg, and many other French composers. Their own tunes are spiced with humors and imaginative lyrics, which bring the audience into the surreal dream world of Mademoiselle. Get ready for the night of dance,laugh and fun- they know how to make the crowd go mad!

SHI YUJI JAZZ TRIO
Jazz that melts the heart
Mr. Shi Yu Ji is one of Beijing's most active and talented saxophonists, often playing with different local and international jazz artists and bands. He is part of the Beijing Blue Note Big Band and also a core member of one of our favorite music ensembles and Modernista's regulars, Terence Hsieh's pop turned jazz experiment The Spice Cabinet. Come to listen to his breathtaking, yet relaxed jazz trio completed with guitarist Xia Qi and Xing Yi Fan on double bass for an early Sunday winter night.
