【SUN 周日 10.15】NATHANIEL GAO QUARTET + RAFAL SARNECKI 爵士之夜：高太行四重奏

This Sunday, we are welcoming back our favorite saxophone player Nathaniel Gao on stage for the LAST SUNDAY JAZZ BEFORE THE 

CONFERENCE BREAK.

This time, Gao is introducing us his good friend and amazing musician Rafal Sarnecki, who's been touring China during the past month. Besides, they will be performing original compositions by bassist Wang ChengHuai, which for his soon to be recorded first album. The quartet will be completed with Wang ChengHuai on bass and Xu Zhitong on drums.

NATHANIEL GAO

Nathaniel Gao is a saxophonist and composer who has been based in Beijing since 2006. He has been a key contributor to the local jazz scene as both a co-leader of the quintet Red Hand as well as a leader of his own quartet and trio. Additionally, Gao has been active in an eclectic range of other musical projects including Three Sergeants Syndrome, The Beijing City Big Band, Afrokoko Roots and Bu Yiding. He has performed at the Ninegates Jazz Festival, the MIDI Jazz Festival, the Ditan Park Music Festival, the Chongqing Jazz Festival, Jarasum International Jazz Festival and at major venues in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu. Gao graduated from UNI in 2006 with BA in music performance and in 2011 completed an MA in jazz performance at the City College of New York.

高太行,2006年以来活跃在北京爵士音乐界的的萨克斯演奏家和作曲家。作为“红手”五重奏乐队的成员之一和他自 己的四重奏和三重奏乐队的主导者,他为北京爵士音乐做出了重要贡献。此外,他还积极参与了其他风格和流派的 音乐活动,包括“Three Sergeants Syndrome”,“北京城市大乐队”,Afrokoko Roots 和 “不一定” 等音乐团体。他参 与了“九门音乐节”, “迷笛爵士节”, “地坛音乐节”, "重庆爵士节","海龟岛国际音乐节"以及北京, 上海, 广州和成都等多 地的演出活动。高太行于2006年获得美国北艾奥瓦大学音乐表演学士学位,于2011年获得纽约城市学院爵士演奏硕 士学位。

RAFAL SARNECKI

Originally from Warsaw, Poland, Rafał Sarnecki is a jazz guitarist and composer currently living in New York. In the 12 years that Rafal spent living in the Big Apple he has become one of the most sought after jazz composers of his generation. As a leader of his own projects Rafal has toured 11 European countries, China, Malaysia, South Korea, Israel and the East and West Coast of the US. He has shared the stage with many top names from the US jazz scene including: Joel Frahm, Ben Wendel, Ingrid Jensen, Alex Sipiagin, Willie Jones III, Gary Thomas to list a few. 

Rafal has recorded 3 CDs as a leader. The debut album Song From a New Place (2008) was nominated for the Fryderyk 2009 Award, the Polish equivalent of a Grammy. Rafal's second album, The Madman Rambles Again, was released in 2011 by the Fresh Sound New Talent label. Dave Sumner from All About Jazz selected the album as among the 12 most interesting jazz releases of 2011 in the Editor’s Choice section. Additionally, Hi – Fi magazine selected The Madman Rambles Again as among the best jazz albums of 2011. In August 2014 Rafal’s third CD Cat’s Dreamwas released by the Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records.

Living in NYC Rafal received his BFA degree from the prestigious Jazz & Contemporary Music Program at the New School and his MA in music performance from the graduate jazz program at the CUNY Queens College. While staying in the US in 2015 he also received a Ph.D. in composition from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.
