This Thursday January 10th we are presenting a very charismatic and versatile concert by one of Chicago's best young saxophone players.
Roy McGrath's quartet is visiting China once more and playing in different venues around town, and Modernista is honored to have them among our January band showcase.
Expect some excellent jazz, and, given Roy's natural ability to step into many different styles, from Latin to Funk, expect as well a bit of spiced up beats for this Thursday evening.

Roy McGrath is a Chicago based tenor saxophonist, composer and bandleader. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico and educated in Boston, New Orleans and Chicago, Roy brings to bear these diverse influences in his playing and composing.

In addition to leading and recording with his own jazz ensembles, he is a member of several others and an in-demand player in the city’s jazz, funk, Latin jazz and salsa scenes. He has led international tours to Mexico, Singapore, Korea and China. As a composer and arranger, Roy is firmly in the jazz tradition, but his Latin American heritage an ever-present mind set, leading to wholly original works that are a tru is e expression of who he is.

SAMUEL PETERS
Samuel Peters is a versatile bassist and educator based in Chicago, Illinois.

Sam earned a BFA in Jazz Studies at the University of Illinois, where he studied with Larry Gray and Chip Stephens. While at Illinois, he enjoyed playing a variety of styles of music in many different University ensembles including the University of Illinois Concert Jazz Band, Symphony Orchestra, Latin Jazz Ensemble, and many Jazz Combos.

BILL CESSNA
Bill Cessna is a multi-instrumentalist with experience teaching drums, guitar, piano, and voice. Bill participated in choral programs and productions including I.M.E.A and various competitions, as well as studying jazz piano while in high school.

JONATHAN WENZEL
Jonathon Wenzel is a native Chicagoan who came up through the Chicago Public Schools. He began his musical journey singing with the Chicago Children’s Choir in 2nd grade, eventually becoming their accompanist playing drum set and percussion. Upon graduating high school, he continued as their primary percussionist and drummer until 2013. Working with the Choir gave him numerous opportunities to perform with high profile musicians and in prestigious venues, touring internationally in Europe, Asia, and South America.
