Make sure you swing by this Wednesday night, because our swing dance evenings are back on the program! No idea what swing dance is yet? No worries - the first step is to simply show up for the Balboa trial class starting at 20:00. Balboa is one of the various styles danced under the umbrella term ‘Swing dance’. Make sure you stay afterwards for a cosy & casual social dance evening where beginners and more advanced dancers are all welcome to practice their moves. Swing away the remnants of the winter cold - ah one and ah two and you will know what to do!

TEACHERS - JEREMY & XIMAO

Balboa dance trial is created for people with no previous dance experience to have a glimpse of what partnered social dancing is like. The teachers will guide you through the basic steps and moves, so that everyone would be able to have some fun at the dance floor by 9 PM! It is not required, but highly recommended to bring a partner for the dance trial.

What is Swing Dance？

什么是摇摆舞？

Swing Dance is a partnered social dance originated in Harlem, New York (USA) and was especially popular throughout the 1920s-1950s. It's a partnered social dance based on leading and following, and danced to jazz music from the same era (mainly Big Band swing). It's a very fun and diverse dance, including many elements combined in a free improvisational manner.

摇摆舞起源于美国纽约的Harlem哈林区。摇摆舞盛行于美国上世纪20-40年代。摇摆舞通常是两个人跳的社交舞蹈，其中也混合了一些独舞动作。摇摆舞者的语言就是节奏、好玩儿和即兴!

Today many swing dancers all around the world enjoy dancing various styles, including Charleston, Lindy Hop, Shag, Balboa and a few others. Often swing dancers would dress up in vintage style, to fully embrace the charm of the swing times. On Wednesdays we are focusing mostly on the style called "BALBOA".

Balboa Origins

巴尔波亚舞的起源

The original Balboa dance is a form of swing dance that started as early as 1915 and gained in popularity in the 1930s and 1940s. Balboa came from Southern California during the 1920s and increased in popularity until World War II.

巴尔波亚舞是一种摇摆舞，早在1915年就开始了，并在20世纪30年代和40年代流行起来。巴尔波亚在20世纪20年代起源于南加州，在第二次世界大战之前一直备受欢迎。

Balboa Aspects

It is danced primarily in close embrace to upbeat swing music. This dance is fully improvisational and can be quite energetic yet elegant. The art of Balboa is in the subtle communication between the lead and follow, including weight shifts, which most viewers cannot see. As a result, Balboa is considered more of a "dancer's dance" than a "spectator's dance". 

这种舞蹈看起来就像是两个人在拥抱，用全身的链接去引带和跟随。巴尔波亚的艺术在于主角和跟随者之间微妙的交流，包括重心的转移，这是大多数观众看不到的。因此，巴尔波亚被认为是“舞者的舞蹈”，而不是“观众的舞蹈”。
