A university in central China’s Hubei province has expelled 92 international students for failing to meet basic requirements, local media reported Sunday.

The students from Wuhan University were expelled for not completing registration procedures or being absent from class without giving notice, according to the media report, which cited a notice the university issued Nov. 29.

The website of the School of International Education of Wuhan University published the "Notice on Proposed Withdrawal of Certain International Students" twice on October 15 and November 21 this year, and announced 154 international students who intend to withdraw from school.

21st Century Business Herald reporters combed and found that 113 undergraduates, 25 graduate students, and 16 doctoral students. They come from nearly 50 countries, of which Kazakhstan, India, South Korea, Mongolia, Vietnam and other countries have a large number of international students.

An unnamed representative from the admissions office of the university’s international department told the outlet that most of the students had low grades, “violated school discipline,” or didn’t pay their tuition fees. The representative added that the school had warned the students a year ago and repeatedly tried to get them to comply with the rules.

In recent years, authorities in China have taken measures to increase international student enrollment at domestic universities in a bid to build a global brand around the county’s tertiary education system.

However, many international students still face needless administrative hurdles at Chinese institutions, which are themselves often criticized for giving international students preferential treatment, including lower admission standards.

In July, a university in the eastern Shandong province apologized after facing backlash over a gender-based “buddy program” for foreign and local participants.

China became the world's third most popular destination for international students in 2018, receiving 10 percent of the world's international students, ahead of many long standing host countries, said a report released in Beijing on December 12.

Chinese netizens also hailed the move. "Whether you are domestic or overseas students, you are supposed to get dismissed if you do not attend classes," a user said on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo, calling on other Chinese universities to enhance teaching quality. Xiong said that Chinese public opinion, which is positive on the issues, reflected public support for domestic universities to develop higher-quality education offered to overseas students.
