As of Tuesday, 21st July, thankfully life in China is returning to normal as the number of COVID-19 cases subsides. However, we all need to keep cautious, disciplined and common sense in case of possible further cases.

This current semester has been taught online at Chinese universities. Some universities have launched new online programs and are giving free online classes. You can learn more and join here.

Right now the border remains closed for international students. More recently, some workers have been allowed to return to China through a special application process.

What will happen to the September 2020 intake?

Admissions are going ahead as normal for September 2020, and some universities have extended their application deadlines. You can see the latest application deadlines here.

The situation for September 2020 intake depends on the COVID-19 situation, the policy of China and the university policy. Some universities have shared their arrangements for September 2020 and It's expected other universities to follow a similar pattern.

A number of universities, such as Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University, and Zhejiang University of Technology have said that for students who are currently in China, they can attend in-person classes. Those who are outside will take the first September 2020 semester online and will be allowed to enter China when the policy changes.

There are also some universities such as Tongji University and Ningbo University that have sent the admissions package to students' home countries and are waiting to see if there will be a policy update in August.

When can I come to China?

As of July, there are still restrictions for international students and they not allowed to come to China.  It is not possible to know when the policy will change, we just need to wait for the official news. We advise you to contact your university for the latest announcements and news on their specific policy. We will also keep you updated and will let you know when the policy changes.

Can I get a student visa?

International students who are already in China can still receive the JW202 form from his/her Chinese university upon admission acceptance.

Some universities have been issuing the JW202 to students outside China. Students can still not use it to apply for the visa until the policy changes. If the policy in China changes in August then students can use it to apply for the visa in their embassy.

What if I can’t submit all application materials by the deadline?

Chinese universities are working their best to accommodate international applicants through flexible admissions policies. This includes: allowing them to submit electronic copies of credentials, consideration to delays in the submission of application materials, online interviews and more. Application deadlines have also been extended to accommodate students better.

If you haven’t been able to take IELTS or TOEFL, you can take the Online IET test which is ready in less than 1 week.

Will there be any discounts in tuition fee for September 2020?

Most universities will be offering the same tuition fee as before. Universities in China are already very affordable by international standards.

Some universities have given discounts for the Spring semester. University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) have lowered their tuition fees by 20%. Chinese universities are also offering more scholarships and financial aid to students.

What measures are in place to ensure the safety of international students in China?

All Chinese universities are mandated to implement strict health measures including ventilation, emergency drills, set up ties with hospitals and disinfection to ensure safety.
