More than 23,000 Indians study in China. All but a handful had returned in a staggered manner in 2020 following the Covid-19 outbreak in China but are now stranded in their home country because Beijing has banned foreign students from returning to universities.

At today's regular press conference of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, a reporter asked the spokesperson about when international students can come to China to resume their studies, and we would like to share the following official information with you.
Indian Broadcasting Corporation (IBC): Recently, foreign students who wish to return to China to continue their studies issued an open letter to the Chinese government, requesting China to make clear arrangements for foreign students to return to China in phases. What is the comment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs? Is there any arrangement on when they will return to China, like next month, the month after next? Have there been any discussions on this?
Hua Chunying: The specific question you mentioned needs to be asked to the competent authorities.
Every country is formulating pandemic-control measures according to the situation on ground, and China’s first priority is to prevent the spread of the disease, which both Chinese and foreigners should be able to understand and try to comply with the Chinese foreign ministry said
Regarding your mention of foreign students' wish to return to study in China, I would like to tell you in principle that the Chinese government attaches great importance to protecting the legitimate rights and interests of the majority of foreign students coming to China, and requires all relevant universities to maintain close contact with overseas students, make serious arrangements for online teaching, and properly handle students' reasonable concerns and demands. China will coordinate the study of foreign students coming to China to resume their studies and maintain communication with all parties in this regard under the premise of ensuring the safety of epidemic prevention.
According to China’s education ministry, until the end of 2018, 4,92,185 international students from 196 countries and regions were studying in China.
With 23,198 students, India was fourth on the list of a country-wise breakup of students studying in China.
South Korea with more than 50,000 students topped it followed by Thailand and Pakistan with over 28,000 students each studying in China.
As the epidemic situation outside China is rather serious, most of the netizens left messages in support of online instruction, and we also hope that foreign students will be allowed to return to school as soon as possible in a safe and controllable condition.
