There are more and more new visas with 3 years, 5 years or 10 years validity period nowadays, but the validity period of passport is usually 10 years. As a result, it`s common that the passport is going to be overdue, but the validity period of visas are still long. So will those visas be invalid too because of the overdue passport?
Actually, different countries have different regulations on this situation, so you should not throw the old passport away.
Don`t cut off the valid visa pages of the old passport
Generally speaking, when we apply for a new passport, the officer of the Entry&Exit Bureau will cut an angle off the whole passport . But if there are any valid visas on the passport, you should inform the officer of that , and ask them to reserve the valid visa pages , and cut the others off.
The new&old passport can be used at the same time
Specifically, there are two kinds of situations.
1. in countries like America, Europe, Japan, Korea, Australia, if there are any complete and valid visa pages on the old passport, then you can use the new&old passports at the same time when you go abroad.
2. In countries like Canada and New zealand, you need to do a transfer process in the consulate.
Notice：Never tear the vaild visa pages out of the old passport and put it on the new passport, it`s definitely wrong! Don`t mutilate the old passport which with valid visa pages on it, or you will fail to go abroad.
Transfer the visa pages to the new passport
There are countries that do not permit to use new & old passports at the same time.
Take Canada as an example, you should go to the consulate personally to submit the application, then provide the related materials , and write an explainatory letter to tell the reason of transfer such as expiry . The service of visa transfer requires fee.
New zealand requires to fill a specific form and services fee, and Singapore needs transfer process too though it uses e-visa.
Make a new passport before applying for long term visa
Most countries started to extend the validity period of Chinese tourists` visas just in the past 2 years, and the period is much longer than ever before. So if you want to keep distance with those troubles, the most simple way must be renew the passport first, then bring the new passport to apply for the long term visas.
