The fourth Thursday of November is regarded as an traditional American festival, the Thanksgiving day. It`s well known that China has “Double Eleven Shopping Festival”, while America has “Black Friday”shopping day. They named it “Black Friday”because people would rush to the shopping mall to buy cheap goods before sun comes out. American prefer to buy presents for their family members and enjoy the wonderful Thanksgiving day together.
When the day of Thanksgiving comes, the whole nation will be very lively, every familiy would eat turkey and traditional dishes like , for example, zucchini, onion with cream, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie and so on. Each family members would try their best to go back home even from far away , to get together and enjoy the delicious dishes and chatting with each other, which makes people feeling close and warm.
At the same time, there would be Costume Parades everywhere, as well as the Drama shows and Sports events. Schools and stores will take a holiday according to the regulations. Children would wear strange costumes and face painting to imitate the appearance of the Indians. According to the custom, people will go the church to pray, so the church used to be rather crowd on that day.
The Canadian Thanksgiving day is on the second Monday of October, the Canada congress set it as a legall holiday just a bit later than America, however, the first thanksgiving day of Canada appeared 40 years earlier than the America`s.
American hold the thanksgiving celebration to cherish the memory of their Puritan ancestors, who settled in the new land. Canadians hold the Thanksgiving day mainly to thank the god for the harvest, but there would also be celebrations like parade and eating turkey too.
The Jews also celebrate the harvest, their festival is called Sukkoth, which will be held in autumn and it has a history of 3000 years.
During the 8-day Sukkoth festival, the jews will build small houses with tree branches, to cherish the memory of the alter which their ancestors worshiped at. Those houses are temporary , and their rooves are covered with thatches, to let the light come through. Fruits and vegetables are hanging in the houses, including apples, grape, corns and pomegranate. On the second day of the festival, the jews will hold the feast in the houses underneath the starry sky.
The harvest festival of ancient Egypt is to cherish the memory of their god of crops, which is used to be held in Spring. During the festival, the ancient egyptian would hold parade first, then the feast. At the same time, music show, dancing party and sports event were also their celebrations.
The ancient egyptian usually pretended to cry bitterly when they celebrated the harvest of corns, in order to cheat the spirit , which the egyptian believed to be existed inside the corns, the ancient egyptians were afraid of making that spirit angry by cutting corns down.
As a cheerful celebration event, a day of family gathering, and a moment of friendship, thanksgiving day always brings happiness. On that day, bachelors would be invited to people`s house to share the feast and happiness togehter, that`s the meaning of thanksgiving day.
